General S2 service and tech help please...!

    Evening all....
Right, I am no mechanic, but have been doing alot of this myself recently and need someone with some knowledge to poke me in the right direction...

    1. Power steering fluid level... I had reason to remove the pipe from the reservoir to the pump, have refilled and steered around a bit... What should the level be? Is it where the reservoir chages from clear to black?

    2. Still power steering pump... after I refilled and ran the car, it seemd very noisy, was wondering if I had over tensioned the belt (I am sure it is not too slack) Either way a squirt of WD40 stopped the noise in a fraction of a second... I am guessing this is not a sensible fix... would it simply be that the car hasn't been started or moved in 2 months? Or do you think it is a sign of worse to come?

    3. Bleeding coolant system... fill as much as possible, remove screws from heater hose and top of rad, leave expansion tank cap off,, heater to max hot, start car, refill as necessary... Seems, whatever I do, the aux rad stays cold, and always seems to air and water squirting from heater bleed screw... Ran till hot , turned off, waitied a bit the level dropped a bit, refilled... Will it now just need topping up a bit as it needs and as air expels? Or should I do something specific? (assuming no leaks)

    4. Boost pressure test... 3B engine, which pipes do you bung? I know obviously you stick the valve plate into where the MAF is, I was hoping to not pressurize the crankcase, but want to test to a reasonable pressure...

    5. Kind of power steering pump again, what is the little screw part, (size of a 10p piece) with a cross on it for? Is it a bleed point? or what....?

    6. Finally, where on Earth is the fuel filter on my car? I searched the forum to find the coupe one is in the engine compartment under a plastic cover... well, while I had the rads, fan, expansion bottle, washer bottle and power steering reservoir out you would have thought I could find it....
I have a German spec, LHD 1991 3B coupe, might the filter be next to the tank, like on the Avant?

Any advice on the above gratefully received.... As I said I am not even slightly a mechanic, but have to do this myself...!

    Thanks

    Chris

Greg, think you were right, twice more and the level seems stable and the aux rad is hot... fingers crossed...

Power steering fluid level remains the same, and noise from pump appears not to have returned.

trial and errored the boost test, seems ok now...

Just need to find the fuel filter... anyone any ideas PLEASE...!!!!

(BTW I dont have any ramps or anything, so access under the car is difficult)

Fuel fillter is a joy on the coupe, done mine in 5mins flat 17mm or a 19mm and a 22mm iirc its under the rear quater pasangers side just follow the fuel lines

And you will need some clamps

Um...... you need to find a big curb or a ditch?

Thanks for that, I will have a decent look, I have a high curb I can use I think...!
I was convinced I had read that it was in the engine bay somewhere, I know its not there...!
                Thanks

The EVAP canister is in the engine bay on the 3B !

Best way to bleed air from hydraulic system is idle engine and go lock to lock - ensuring that level doesn't go below minimum.

Bleeding the coolant system is a PITA - can take a few goes. Wouldn't worry about squealy belts if you have been off the road for a while.

PS - I sent you that thin link hose in brand new factory material yesterday... Seems that you found a local workaround

I cant see the canister anywhere, its dark now, I was wondering if because it is a LHD they might have put it somewhere else, rather like the battery under the seat...

Thanks for that Paul, the hose I have used is off a 1993 Rover, so I don't expect it to last too long, so I will be replacing it as soon as possible. The 8mm was just too stretched when I had done it...

                    Thanks for the help guys

The noise was more clattery clangy than squealy, but as yet hasn't reappeared, hopefully as you say, been off the road for a bit...
