HELP! Bonnet stuck shut on MK2 Golf

Hi Guys,

I have posted this on a VW forum too, but I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to how to open the bonnet on my MK2 Golf now that the bonnet release cable has come away at the catch end!

I have not had a proper look at it as it was dark this morning when I was fiddling around with it.

are you able to get the main grille out to access it?

If you can get some grips on the broken end in the footwell thats your best bet otherwise its out with the badge and its easy from there!

I found the answer on another forum

Crawford, you are dead right, pull the grille badge out and you can see everything including the lever to release the main bonnet catch. For some reason (I would guess at the very cold weather) the spring that holds the slide lever for the catch had broken AND the cable had come off leaving me stuck and unable to open the bonnet!
