Didn't Shell change from 98 RON with Optimax, to 99 RON with V-Power?
    Sure I read that somewhere

So you guys really think that the whole of Europe has been running on a completely different fuel to us and that Shell make a special blend just for the UK??....

Optimax had a minimum rating of 98.6 RON guaranteed and was nearer 99odd and was tested at over 99ron.
If you guys really think that they drained the tanks when they changed from Optimax to V-power then i think your mad.......
          Anyone heard of Marketing?

          Pete.

Yes and Shell Optimax was crap in comparisson to V-Power available in Europe. Ron rating yes but the MON rating is what counts.

Are you trying to say petrol is petrol all over the world?

I'm sure our american residents will tell you that aint so

Yes Pete I have heard of marketing and I am one of the biggest cynics around. But I used V power on and off for years in France and Switzerland. It was and is a superior fuel to Optimax which was re branded 'superunleaded' and marketed to the hilt.
Anyway ignore my views and ask Mihnea who has remapped a 'few' cars in his time the difference between the two. Doug did mention several degrees timing difference IIRC with V power over optimax.
Anyway I can tell the difference with the RS2 no problem and thats all that matters to me

RON rating is used in Europe and Optimax and V-Power were within 0.4 RON of each other documented - Motor Octane Number has nothing to do with this discussion but if you want to use it then 99RON would equate to 89 MON.
Reality is that Optimax exceeded 98.6 Ron as this was a minimum guaranteed figure listed by Shell hence the ability to switch over to V-Power withy some clever marketing twaddle.
Ive used both in the same vehicle and there was no difference - believe what you want to beleive but work out the costs involved in the same company developing two additive packages, one for Optimax in the UK only and one for the rest of Europe - doesnt make sense now does it??? - and what happened to all the Optimax in the tanks of all the Shell garages in the UK on the morning of the V-Power national rollout? - did it all gain .4 RON overnight??...
No because it is the same stuff

Anyway Tesco's 99 outperforms all the marketing mans dream fuels...

Here in the Netherlands we have only 2 options as far as i know.
                    - Shell 95 VPower
                    - Bp, Texaco etc. unleaded 98

The last one i thought was the best option but it's getting rare. Alot of gas stations don't sell 98 anymore. So anyone know what's the best option?
Drive miles to get some 98 or the 95 Vpower from shell for example?

In Germany i accidentally used 'normal' 95 fuel and had no problems only it lost abit of torque it seems. Don't know for sure.

                    Thanks for help.
                    Tim

Yes definatly, i can remember way back in 1984 my dad and i went over to GTi Engineering to get his Audi Coupe rejetted and setup on a rolling road. The guys there were amazed with the fuel we were using, they claim they were able to advance the ignition timing way more than any UK car they had setup previously.

And that was standard fuel, i dont think the high octane stuff even existed back then. Infact it could even have been lead petrol in those days...
