    FilterMAG.

OK, whilst browsing Chris Longhursts very informative Carbible site, I came across a bit on magnetic sleeves for use over your oil filter.
Chris seems to be a chap who isn't moved by gimmicks, and goes on to say he did try the idea and gave it the thumbs up.

Link to the page in question is here, the part in question is about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Both of the products he speaks of are available online, one of them is also available on US ebay.

Thoughts on these? I change oil religiously every 5k miles and use a new genuine oil filter, but anything else that helps capture any metal debris that is too small to be captured by the oil filter can only be a good thing can't it?.
I suppose it can't do any harm, but is it worthwhile?

Yep, I've got one fitted on the S4 Jas. Also had one on the quattro too.
Think of it as cheap insurance against any ultimately damaging metal particles floating around in there.
I got mine (an RA-300) here in the UK from Blue Diamond:

Thanks for that Pete, I does seem a very good idea.
I'm always sceptical with products like these, but in this case, it's theory seems sound.
I've purchased one from your link (thanks) and will use on the oil change next week, then see what it removed when I split the filter open 5k miles later.

Pete! you could have warned me dude
Jesus H are those magnets powerful, placed it on an new filter and it snapped onto it with enough force to give me a blood blister on my finger that got nipped under the side
And absolutely no magnetic pull from the outside at all, nothing.
Be interesting to see the inside when I cut it open in 5000 miles time.

Ah, yes they can be a bit viscous if your finger gets caught underneath!
I nearly did that myself when I first fitted one too. I now usually slide it up the filter to fit it.

Not sure if there will be actually anything significant to see in the filter after 5K though. But at least you know it's there if there is.
