Me and my mate are thinking of builting a go kart we will have it set up like a normal gokart using a premade frame but we have been debating over what engine to use we would both like to use a hayabusa 1300 engine but thinking this may be very hard to rig up
has any1 on here built a go kart before that could give us some pointers and any ideas on a good engine

A hayabusa engine would be way over the top and unusable IMHO..
i have read about a few R6 engined karts that some US guys have made...and theres a video somewhere of a nutter with a GSXR750 lump iirc
A mate of mine had a go-kart with about 80bhp and that was almost undriveable. Everytime he put the power down on a straight it would just pop a wheelie for the entire duration of the throttle being open.
In the corners it would just spin. Lots of fun though.
Dan i know of a couple of kart chassis if your serious !!.
I had a 250 gearbox kart recently , that put out 65/70 hp and was nuts ,haybus lump would be nice but trust me you will never put the power down.
P.s gearbox kart brakes are very good most have drilled discs and 4 pot calipers ect , the one i had was capable of well over 100mph and could stop almost as fast as it accelerated!.
Rekon a 600 sportbike lump would be plenty enough grunt , you also need to think where you can use such a beast , santa pod springs to mind!
I'd recommend looking at fujimoto or rotax snowmobile engine's for a really fast kart.
We used to use a 400cc fujimoto engine for thrust in my old F2 hovercraft.
Never had it on a dyno but both types of engine are piece of cake to convert to direct drive and we used to run them in race spec with a redline of about
17-19,000rpm!!!! they're fairly reliable too you get about 6 hours use out of the engine at that spec, but you can do a re-build in about an hour once you've done one or two
Plus in a kart your not going to be running 19,000rpm direct drive, unless your going for landspeed records
Your biggest problem is always going to be putting the power down, even if you work on 200kg for kart and driver (you'll probably come out less than that if your using a normal kart chassis) 150bhp would give you 750bhp per ton
Just into perspective an RS6 is just over 200bhp per ton a Ferrari enzo is approx 400bhp per ton and F1 cars only make about 1000bhp per ton and look at the traction control systems they have to employ.
I'm not trying to put you off I'd be first in line for a go
just remember to weld on those wheelie bars and get the stickiest rubber you can.
Best of luck with the project though mate

How do bikes put 170bhp down if your all saying a kart cant handle it??
Dont really see how this can be the case to be honest.
Its all down to how smooth and progressive you are with the power i would say.

Several factors really,
you've kind of hit on one of them karts are generally direct drive or a very simple gearbox (2 speed) to keep weight down, whereas modern bikes will have 6 or 7 speed gearboxes so you have much more control over the use of the power.
But also bikes are heavier so power to weight is less than the same engine in a kart.
Also if you really open up a big bike you pull a wheelie all of the weight then goes over the back wheel adding to the traction, you don't get the weight transfer in a kart so you just end up spinning the wheels

Just a thought Dan but as this is the S2forum how about 4 wheel drive :mischeif:
It would be more difficult to sort out but I'm sure a simple setup would be do-able and with the sort of power to weight your looking at the extra weight would be negligable.
The extra grip would certainly be welcome though might be a bit heavy on the steering though.
But where there's a will....

One my brother built (did the chassis etc). 240bhp with Nos (Turbo FireBlade motor). (side panels not fitted in pic)
Yes it was v.dangerous, and would wheelspin all the way down the length of the strip. I had a CBR600 powered one and that was much more user friendly excellent!
