          Not only does the banding affect only cars after 2001, but the increased banding prices at this budget only affect cars bought new since the previous budget.

          (EDIT: furthermore, the big increase only affects the highest band vehicles)

          I guess the government works on the basis that the older cars will eventually fall out of circulation as they fall apart or get wrecked.

          Older cars are still in fixed price ranges. According to DVLA site the prices are still only for cars not over 1549cc and cars over 1549cc, no mention of over 3000cc at all as of writing. I think the 3000cc thing is a news item regarding a possible shortfall in funds caused by the reduced revenue that is being predicted.

          Not over
          1549cc = £115 (12 months) £63.25 (6 months)

          Over
          1549cc = £180 (12 months) £99 (6 months)

            Absolutely right. Just did my new tax over the web. 12 months @ £180.

            Worth every penny. Potholes filled in....new speed humps springing up...nice clear speed restriction signs...

                There is an added subtlety which I have only just discovered today by reading the information on the DVLA website.
                The increases of £300, and then to £400 on Band G cars (ie. pretty much anything >3.0litres, and in fact quite a few down to only 2.0l if you're unlucky) ONLY applies to cars bought after March 2007.

                The other subtlety which I can't seem to get confirmed is what happens to cars that were originally considered band F (ie. >225g/km), would now be considered band G, but were registered before March 07?

                Ie what happens to my car, the 3.0L V6, registered 2003 - it may be good news? My tax disc was £195 in Sept of last year (or when ever it was I bought it/ sold the S2).

                This may also have implications for my Richmond Council Parking Theft Charge, but again I can't make sense of their "guidance".
