Sorry. I was supposed to get back to the forum sooner than this.
I'm not going to get rid of the old banger just because of a small problem, like a broken gearbox.
This is only the second time I can recall the car letting me down in 3½ years, so I can't complain. Especially after all the abuse it's had. 
It is nice to know I've got you guys looking out for me, just in case I do loose the plot.
It's also nice to know some of you think the old girl is still worth more than £500. The recovery man offered to take the car straight to the nearest scrap yard!
