Have been without t'interweb since Friday when I originally saw this.

Went to see it today and spent a lot of time looking over the car and speaking to the seller etc. On the face of it the car is honest, drives well and is in good condition for what it is IMO. There is some rust and imperfections on the car but it is 22 years old with 143k on it.

The seller was open about the work that he and the previos owner had done to the car and that he had only owned it for a short time. The A pillar has been patched up and I have just become aware of the original state of it so am now going to investigate what has been done further.

The callipers, brake lines, suspension and other faults described in the original ad were replaced and this was openly declared by the seller with receipt for the work from a local garage that could be chased up if required.

Will have to wait and see what his response to questions about the A pillar and then assess the situation but at present a friend and I have bought the car so my excitement has been marginally dampened for now.

More than he's spent but that's all part of the car buying game I guess. He's not made much out of it as there's been a bit of work go into it since buying it off Ebay, MOT work cost over £200 plus some new brake pads and a few other parts, MOT, tax etc on the car.

He seemed to be an enthusiast with quite a few cars on the go and a couple of Quattros, his reason for selling was to get cash to get the Quattro back on the road. He was a nice chap, answered all questions and disclosed most of what had been done. Both Pete and I agreed he was nice enough.

He put figures in our heads of £1200 - £1500 when arranging to go up to look at it and suffice it to say we agreed a price lower than that so we thought we'd got a bragain and he made a bit for some work. Again, all part of the car game I suppose.

There is a set of wheels (possibly period wolfrace) with 4 newish tyres included so might make a couple of pennies out of them as they apear to be the wrong offset for the 90 and scuff on bumps! No worries though as they'll be coming off before collecting the car and shoved in teh boot. Need to assess the wheel situation in due course but would like a set of period 15s on there.

If we complete the deal in light of the information I've uncovered today then it will be kept OE with a few tweaks to engine (cam and possibly head) for a little more grunt, will modify the airbox in time honoured fashion for a bit more noise and will give the suspension a complete rebuild but I've just had to do that on the S2 so just have to do it all over again! Guessed about £500 to get the body up to a decent condition, maybe a bit more if the A pillar is not up to scratch and the sills are a bit off, about the same for the suspension (standard components, possible gas dampers) and the same again for the tuning / rolling road tune etc. Total for a 'show' car (nort up to some of the high standards set by others on here but it's my first attempt) £2500.

Basically, me and Pete wanted a car that was completely different, could be restored from a reasonable starting place and ahave got that with the bonus that it could tow his track day VW Scirocco. Hopefully we can work through the information that I've uncovered and sort out any problems on the way and can do the 90 proud, after all I'm not adverse to getting my hands dirty and neither is Pete.

Right, sorted out the level of the rust on the A pillar with the seller and have ascertained what level of repair has been carried out. As suspected he had patched the car up as it was supposed to be a daily but then got bored of 10v fuel economy and decided to move on. Sounds like it can be left for the moment and then fully repaired when we get the body work done.

Picking this up with my mate Pete on Saturday and then going to give it a good going over to find out exactly what we've got before coming up with a plan of action for the restoration. Going to be supplied with the OE 14s as the 15s in the pics rub as they are the wrong offset, I assume they're from a Pug or Frd and are et15-20 whereas the 90 should be around et35-42 from what i can find. That would explain the rubbing issues! Might have to get them machined but looking to see what other period alloys are available. Any ideas anyone? 15s only! ATS cups, MIMs, AZEVs are all options but finding them second hand in 4x108 is a PITA. 4x100, no problems

Have emailed Pete at Quattro Corner to get a price list for a suspension overhaul and then going to look for a cam and possibly head or do that myself! Engine seemed sweet and apart from requiring the usual K-jet tune and possibly have to chase a couple of air leaks too, more than likely in the vacuum piping as ever(!). Apart from that, it will remain standard for now and most of the budget ploughed into getting the bodywork up to basic show standard and getting the suspension back to it's former glory (just in case we decide to drive it round a track or two!!!).

Can't wait to get dirty with the old girl, fingers crossed that she's not hiding too many suprises!
                              Cheers'en, AndyC
