      Signed.

Purely an initiative to sell more new cars, with the obvious economic benefits that entails for the government

Q: Which has more of a negative effect on the environment, running an older car with slightly higher emissions, or creating a new car from scratch? ******s!

Several EU proposals across the years are dangerous to the classic car movement.

Depending upon whose data you believe, the design, R&D and production of a new car accounts for anything between 40-90% of all the lifetime energy consumption of the vehicle "from dust-to-dust", so yes therefore maintaining and running efficiently an older car could be argued to be far better for the environment than constantly buying new ones for minor economy and pollution gains.

This is the arguement behind the stories/claims now of cars like the Jeep Cherokee being one of the least environmentally damaging cars you can buy as it was designed 60 years ago, is manufactured from low-tech materials(easily re-cyclable/disposable-of) and has had very little R&D done on it since. The same arguements will also counter that cars like the Toyota Pius, and indeed the Lexus Hybrids are the most damaging because of the high levels of industrial R&D pollution and because of the high-tech materials and running gear used in construction (not to mention all that battery acid!)...

It's all a load of balls.

I am in two minds on this one....

Firstly I think it is the worst fooking idea of the century

Secondly I think, this will never actually happen. How will all the government ministers, politicians, judges, lords etc who own classic Bentley's an so on do the London to Brighton.

Banning cars over 10 years old excludes MClaren F1's, Jaguar 220's etc, not to mention Ferrari 250's, AM DB4/5/6's, Maseratis, D-Types, E Types and all the other glorious REAL cars, most of which are owned by VERY wealthy and powerful people. Remember the outcry when they tried to bring in continuous licensing? The classic car movement is so large and powerful, the government were forced to invent the pre 1973 zero cost license bracket.

A final thought, whether they manage this or not, I WILL drive my 40 year old Triumph on the roads that I pay extortionate taxes for and I will NOT allow some bureaucrat to force me to wire in a black box for road charging into a car that I have lovingly restored. Calling it a classic allows one to to do this as you gain the weight of the huge classic car movement

                          Cheers n

Hmmm and thats why the date hasn't been moved the gov haven't got the money to do it. I own 3 modern classics, the oldest is 25 and at 25 she should get free road tax but the goal posts were changed All my babies are road legal but it costs me an arm and a leg to keep them that way

Oh and that's a whole other can of worms isn't it - how the frack do they expect to wire up >28million cars into a nationwide tracking system? Surely it'll just create, overnight, a black market in hackers offering "de-tracking" services? Not to mention that every single major IT system this Government has tried to introduce has gone completely t*ts up - witness the latest buffoonery in the Department of Health with the new doctors' application system - a complete and utter balls up!

If it wasn't so serious, and if it wasn't our money, it would be funny.
