    Disk Skimming?

anyone got a rough idea what i should be looking at for an engineering place to skim a pair of disks? I've got a bit of warpage but still loads of 'meat' on the disk, thinking about a skim to put 'em straight.... anyone offer any advice?

How do you know that they are warped?...did you measure them or is this an assumption based on vibration?

If truely warped, how did you manage that? Do you race the car? The only normal way to warp a modern disk is to heat it very high, very quickly, when new and not bedded in...i.e. and extreme heat cycle on a green disc. Once the disk has been bedded in and is blued, it is normally DAMN hard to warp it

I got a set done before, think it was £20 per disk. Older Hondas were very prone to it, i belive its the crappy floating capliers, under heavy braking they tend to twist on there mounts so they put more pressure on the inner edge of the pad than the outer, which causes the inside of the disk to heat up quicker = warpy warpy.

I usually get frowned upon if I charge more than £20 for skimming a pair of disks round here.
Did some for a local ice cream seller the other day, who nearly had a heart attack when I charged him £30 for three disks. Said he'd bought a new pair for £26.
        Tight **** me thinks.

Yeah they are warped - vibration under braking, getting increasingly bad as brake temperature increases i.e. slowing down for roundabouts on dual carriageways etc.
I bedded them in properly but i have overheated them many times since (damb that 9 mile B-road to work :mischeif: )

Whats the best kind of outfit to take them to to get skimming done? A backstreet engineer or something?

I used to use a local friendly engineering shop in a unit beside a friends business, who would machine anything for a tenner in his lunchtime. It helped that he was a car fanatic.

Dunno how much stock disks are, but my A8 disks for the 996 conversion were £32 each, so go to a bigger engineering shop and the skimming might cost as much as £20 each. Personally, I don't see much of an advantage to skimming over new disks, particularly if you don't already have a friendly shop lined up fo little jobs.

hehe.. benefit to me would be not having to shell out for new disks
Cars up for sale in the non-too-distant, getting a shed diesel for 6 months while i save up for an ABY coupe

so new disks are £60 a pop vs £20-30 for skimming

I wouldn't skim a disc, except into the bin.
And I am that engineering company that can machine anything and a car nut.

Its also possible to have the discs skimmed while they are on the car which balances them properly too. bit of a plug but my dads garage has a skimming machine for this, may be a bit far for you since they are near shrewsbury www.billsmith.co.uk 01939261010

I'm with BRY on that, I wouldn't skim my own disks, unless I was selling the car the next day....which it sounds like is the case here.

I might try a few engineering places but failing that, ********, just plump for some new disks
