    Disaster of a day!

Went to pick my car up today. Left home at 7.30am hoping to get to Dover for about 10.

Due to engineering work on the underground, had to make a detour to get to Victoria. Got to Victoria but obviously running a bit later now. Not too bad - or so I thought.

Got onto the Dover train. Got as far as Canterbury East. Train terminated due to engineering work. B******s!
BUs to take us rest of the way. Massive traffic jam on A2. Finally arrived at 12.30.

Saw my car and at least that put smile on my face. Looking mean with new 'bigger' IC. And now pleasantly running much quieter with no noise from the fuel pumps (old 4 litre swirl pot was too small and pumps over-running it. Now remedied with 6.5 litre swirlpot in boot). Oh and IM now reinforced and welded! Yippee - or so I thought?

Just the drive home to look forward to. Off I set. Needed some fuel to get me home. No Shell in Dover, so thought just some BP to get me to Ashford - Shell garage there.
Put in £15 of their Ultimate and off I set.

About 10 miles down the road, Spluter, splutter!. Pulled off at slip road. Car stalled. Started her up, Massive cloud of smoke out the back (white smoke). More smoke from under bonnet and burning smell.... eeeek!

Not good. Fortunately a fire services vehicle driving past so got some water on smouldering wheel inner before ignition.

As for cause of thiese problems - seems the idiot I am I put some diesel in my tank back in Dover.

Not trying to shirk my responsibility with this one, but why do BP insist on calling their superunleaded Ultimate as well as their cleaner diesel? Not only that, they are right next to each other on the pump! My stupidity for sure, but I'm sure I'm not the first to make this mistake nor will I be the last!

Anyway, just short of a 2 hour wait for recovery lorry to appear and got car back to Dover. My fears were confirmed about the diesel. Fingers now really crossed that have not managed to damage the turbo as it ran soooo hot? Have to wait and see?

Off course, not being able to drive home, had to go back by train. Single to Dover from London £23 (return £23.50). Obviously only bought the single - so another £15.90 to get home + LU costs and buses in London). And all those engineeroing works

Well just this minute got home. it's been a long day and guess what?
Moron I am, I have my Audi keys in my pocket..... doh

Definitely a day I want to forget, so off to get blitzed now.

This may have scuppered my plans for GTI too.
    Rant over.
    Cheers

      bad day

my old escort diesel didn't like unleaded petrol the time i filled it up with it!
lucky for me it was the older stronger 1.6, on later engines the heads used to melt

      fingers crossed for you!

Don't quote me on this, but I think you'll find if you fill up a petrol vehicle with diesel, it'll just need all the filters, plugs etc thoroughly cleaned and it should be okay...

Petrol in a diesel is potentially lethal.

Hmmm how much was put in? if less the 1/2 a tank keep topping up with petrol and keep the car moving and keep topping up it should be ok , eventually when the diesel has gone....no need for any changes. I know my hubby was stupid enough to do the same with his car!!!!!!!!!!!!

                    Cheers Ben,
I had picked up the manifold. It's in the car but back at AM. H, is under lots of pressure (as always) to get a couple of other cars done, so not sure if he can do it this week. Bummer eh?

Aparrently, there's been alot of cases of this happening with BP - but the other way round... ie diesel's running on petrol!

BP seem to have this stupid idea of branding both diesel and petrol as 'ultimate' and using black & red pumps so unless you're a "relular" you'd quite likely get the 2 confused.

According to my brother, alot of guys on the BMW forum have complained to BP customer services - aparrently it's received so much attention that they're acknowledged the problem and some have even received compensation to cover the damage. If you don't mind being an ******** about it you could get the damage paid for.

Did exactly the same thing with my van, ended puting in £15 worth of petrol in before i realised, luckily i topped it up with diesel and didnt have any problems, i actually now remember that being at a BP station

Hope its not too bad Chris

You can run top up a diesel car with a little unleaded and it will run better!

Chip fat burner dodgers use unleaded in the mixture and it's all good.

I found out all about that after frantically searching the net to see if i had done any serious damage i think its the other way round when you run diesel through a petrol motor though, Sorry for rubbing salt in the wound Chris

Diesel pumps don't like petrol much, as it's not very lubricating. Sorry to hear that Chris, I'm sure it will be ok.
