I have seen it loads of times where people have changed over intercoolers from small to huge and had effects.

There was different effects for different cars, I recall increased boost being one of them.

Having a bigger surface area in the intercooler would be making more area to fill which would mean that it needs more air pushed thru it, has the boost been upped or is it still the same? most times when i've seen larger intercoolers fitted that the owners able to run more boost not sure if this helped with the lag part but did help with the overall power.

I there are many factors that need to be considered, differential pressures in both manifold, cams and cam timing, ignition, exhaust housing etc.

Maybe it is an idea to bolt in a 200q tranmission, which is exactly the same 016, only with 3.89 gears instead of 4.11. You'll need an old UrQ rear diff to match that.

Have to be a bit careful here. Certaintly all the UK 200Q's I have had the pleasure of have had 4.11 final drives. Perhaps they were 3.89 on the very early ones (pre 86?). All the Torsen equiped ones have been 4.11.
Depends what Chris is trying to do. Whether he is looking for taller gears or final drive or both!

final drive of a 200 in a 90, sounds scary to me..... The chassis is not that big... 270km/h is not something i would dare do in a typ81/85 chassis

Irrespective of my late spool up problems, ultimately I need longer gears to make full use of the power. Low final drive would be useful for better fuel economy when on a long run, but not essential.

Right! So you want taller/longer gears. Again you could obtain this just by altering the final drive from 4.11 to 3.89 assuming you can find suitable replacements, or indeed changing the rolling radius via trye size.
I'll try and look up the actual ratios of the 200 4.11 box. Although I have a horrible feeling that the ratios are similiar but the overall gearing is taller as they were on 15 inch wheels not 14, therefore having a greater rolling radius. What is your tyre size presently?
Presumably you are looking at the A6 Tdi 5 pot box. That will probably have taller gears and final drive but will probably need a complete drivetrain replacement from the flywheel back to the rear diff.

Of course another choice is Torsen or non Torsen!
Both have either 3.89 or 4.11 variants but see my earlier comments.
As far as I can see all used the following ratios.
                  1st: 3.60
                  2nd: 2.125
                  3rd: 1.36
                  4th: 0.97
                  5th: 0.73

I am guessing that the first two ratios are common on most of the 016 boxes. I think your 90 box has closer 3rd, 4th and 5th.
So quite a few things to take into consideration if you want the relatively less hassle of a 016 box.

Is the 01E 5 speed g/b from the early S2 a direct fit?
That g/b allows for 73 in 2nd from what I can recall.
                    Cheers
