    SORN and insurance

I'm about to declare my S2 SORN so that i can start the engine out work and wondered whats the deal with car insurance. Renewal is due in a few days time, do I need to renew it whilst its SORN, presuming so but can't seem to find a default response anywhere.

    Anyone here confirm the position?

a creaky jointed 31yr old is closer to it.......if i run a shed in the meantime then i guess it keeps the co claims going anyway right. If there was any damage to the car whilst sat on the drive uninsured though then i guess I fork out for it myself right?

        Hi David,
You might consider asking your insurer if they provide off road cover only, this should be much cheaper, let you continue to build your NCB and also cover the car for any damage/theft etc while you are doing your works.

            Morning David

            I had a motor laid-up a few years back
The insurer wanted the car fully garaged for it to go on a specific laid-up policy but as I have no garage, I had to plump for fully comp in the end to get the accidental damage cover
However the car was under a 2nd car, limited mileage policy so was pretty cheap anyway

Not sue if all companies have the same rules on laid-up motors but this seemed to be the general consensus at the time.

            Hope this is useful

Should NOT be hard for an insurance company to provide fire and theft cover if your car is in the garage for long term work. Best to keep a 'shed' running for continuous policy cover and the NCB up to date.

to close this off, in the end because the car won't be in the garage I just renewed the insurance instead with someone who didn't care about SORN, Elephant on the other hand did, saying that they wouldn't cover the car whilst SORN'd...odd but true.

So off to A Plan and just renewed for £285.

                31yrs old + wife named
                11yrs protected no claims
                5k miles p/a
                £200 excess
All mods declared (brakes, wheels, exhaust, suspension etc)
European cover and replacement car in the event of a crash etc, bloody good deal i thought

                Cheers

Not sure if it's of interest but I just got my renewal through for another year with Aon on a modern classics policy with an agreed value, all mods listed, policy holder +1, track day cover included, no NCB required (assumed 2nd car), unlimited mileage all for £220 per year.

How much did you value your car at (I take it youre talking about the quattro)
                        Agreed insurance value?

Yes it was the Quattro and the agreed value was 20k. Initially I had a mileage restriction and you can buy as much as you like and can even add more to it as the year goes on e.g. you get a quote on 3k to keep the renewal cost down and if you reach this you can buy more road cover in lots of 1000 miles, then after a number of years (possibly 3 but maybe 5) they remove the restriction and just give you unlimited. As it is accepted that the car is (usually) a 2nd car you do not require to submit your NCB (they pretty much presume you have full (5+) yrs on your first car. It does need top be garaged when left overnight if at your home (or garaging address if different) but can be left outside when away from home (or further than .25 mile). I have always found them to be very helpful on the phone, but no claims experience (touch wood) so not able to comment here. One other thing they do is you can have more than one car on the same policy with separate agreed values and share the mileage allowance between the two cars. Final thought is that there may be a age restriction on the policy holder and named drivers, some are excluded completely and others carry an additional premium.

                          Hope this is helpful

                            Not SORN but:

I got my insurance down to £250 this year by using www.confused.com ! I went back to Adrian Flux who originally quoted me £450 and they matched the quote from confused....!

                            Cheers,
