Firstly, the turbo will glow after a quick drive, not a problem as long as its not incandescent.. If you pull up quick in the dark and pop the bonnet you can sometimes see the impeller still spinning
Second, do a pressure test for boost leaks
Third, make sure your engine mounts are all good and the xhaust is not sitting on the subframe or touching the floor.
Fit a new pump and filter?

Ok, the glow is very light. Before the remap the turbo looked like the Shankara stones in the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom after a short drive. Now it glows a faint hue of orange.

How do you do a pressure test on these cars????? I am new to turbo power after living for 10 years now with a 7A nonpower Coupe, so I don't know some of the tricks.

Engine mounts and tranny mounts are all new, and the and nothing touches.

I have a new fuel filter.

THe Pump however is just a stock 7A pump wiith the pressure damper. Could that be my problem???

The later Coupes with the 7A engine and 3B and ABys shared the same pumps but WITHOUT a pressure damper on the pump. Could this be the problem??

    Thanks for your help!

Best bet like the others said is either a EGT test or get it on a rolling road, you could spend loads chasing ideas/opinions when a simple RR test will sort it out or highlight the problem so you can.
No CAT. I have a stock 3B down pipe going to a straight pipe to the resonator and CAC rear muffler.

Who can do a EGT test? A speedshop?

WHat is a rolling road??? I that a Dyno???

      THnks for your thoughts!!!

        Rolling road = chassis dyno
You basically need to find one that can check the air/fuel ratio.
Unless you know its setup properly I certainly wouldnt want to drive it on alot of boost, especially if its running lean!!

          Got the boost gauge installed....RESULTS!

Well, finally I get the boost guage line set in the post yesturday and installled last night to see some numbers.

THe unit is the VDO, white face in PSI..Pounds per Square Inch NOT BAR.

I tapped into the vacuum line that goes from the ECU to the FPR "T" and the Intake manifold. All fittings are brass NPT 1/8 threaded bits with teflon tape to seal the threads and Otiker hose clamps.

At startup, car idles perfectly at a rock steady 900 RPMS.

Boost guage at idle is about 13-14 NEGATIVE PSI

Took her out for a drive I get around a maximum boost gauge reading of around 15 PSI positiive boost.

Anyone with any thoughts about the glowing turbo with these boost output numbers.

          thanks
          joe

Your going to have to take this to a tuner or another member near you.

You need to find out your EGT temp and a wide band lambda sensor to see your air to fuel ratio

Boost pressure isn't going to indicate the problem.

Almost everybody I know who has this set up has fitted an uprated fuel pump like this one:

              http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...9007&rd=1&rd=1

I don't know for a fact but I would have thought a std 7A pump would struggle to cope with the demands of an RS2 spec engine. Have you tried checking the plugs? they should give you a general indication if the engine is running lean.

that suggestion possess a wee bit of a problem....

Your going to have to take this to a tuner or another member near you.

                I live in the States.

There are only about a dozen or so E/S2 Coupe conversions in the States spread over a country with 320 MILLION people.

Tuners around here play with only rice cars and new cars. None of them mess with old school Audi.

What do lean plugs look like???? I will pop them out and take a look see.

I know what rich ones look like but never seen a lean plug.

                  Thanks for the info!

Buy one of these and check the AFR yourself:-

                    http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/p...s/g2_gauge.php

A lean plug will be white, ideally it should be a nice tan/golden brown colour.

Hi joe ,I had the same red turbo issue with my 3b,it was caused by the tps or throttle position sensor,it had stopped working properly, this caused over fuelling by the ecu, and unburnt being burnt of in the em and turbo, heanse the red turbo. I changed the tps for a second hand one and all was ok after that, exsept for one issue ,and that was the hiccup, that you say you have.Ihad my car plugged into vagcome, stationery and when driving and the onl fault listed was g28,spead sender. The only problem is that due possibly to the turbo exsetra getting hot,the head gasket failed and I ended up changing the engine, you can read all obout this in my more resent posts.
What I will say that the on ly sensor I replaced in the rebild was the g28, and I don't have the hiccup anymore.

Hi Joe I had all these issues with my standard 3b,it turned out to be the tps causing over fueling and unburnt fuel being burnt of in the em and turbo. If you read my threads its all delt with there,

plugs pulled and look very dry

Pulled the plugs.... Ceramic portion of the tips is white to bleach white on some plugs.

THe electriode tip is clean and the remaining threaded portion is blackended with carbon. No dampness/foulness from fuel at all on any plug. Very dry.

So, I would say she is running lean.

Should I start with a better fuel pump?

As already said, I would definitly get the fueling checked on a rolling road!
If you carry on running on full boost its only a matter of time until you are posting about your melted piston....

As for tuners not being interested in Audis, if they are any good they should be able to check the fueling on ANY car, its not exactly hard lol

Check that the TPS clicks when you hand operate the throttle, get your ear as close as you can to the throttle body by hand and you should hear it click. The TPS throttle position sensor, is the little square black box attatched to the back of the throttle body by two screws, you dont need the car running for this by the way.
This deffinatly was the cause of my turbo ect glowing red hot, this and other issues not unlike that which you disscribe, are in a thread called,High idle slight .
