Looking at a 20v CQ

I'm looking at a 20v CQ as a stop gap whilst i save for an S2.... its covered a fair few miles at 198k so i'm going to be quite careful checking it over. But price is reasonable at just under a grand.
I've had a 2.8 CQ before, really wondered what i should be looking out for with the 20v - can anyone help me out with any advice when checking it over as i know parts can get expensive. I assume most of the running gear will be common with the 3B?

The car is 90% the same as a 3B, as with all Audis the weak point is suspension bushings. As long as the body is in good condition and there is no nasty noises from the drivetrain/engine you cant go far wrong.

The only weak points of the 7A engine is the fuel injectors, there are prone to failure and usually start with crappy performance and fuel economy. Also the plastic gear on the distributer can fail and leave you stranded but its an easy fix. The rest of the engine is basically the same as an S2 so it isnt stressed at all. They are known for doing silly mileage, mines at ~300k miles and still going stong.

i've had one before a 20v quattro sport (not coupe) and that was bullet proof. Only thing to let me down was the dizzy gear which went (ironically in the same spot as my s2 did on the way home from work).

um, from what I recall they are normally what's put into s2's so not sure? If you want to sell the standard one's i'd be interested. lol

by the sound of it, unlikely to be another suitable cam in the 'range' - definately won't be buying aftermarket as that'll be eating into my S2 fund

surprised if this has not eaten into your fund, tbh if it was me i'd just wait the little bit longer and get the s2. Tho I will say the sound of a 20v with a custom airfilter on sounds the nuts

That was mine, now sold unfortunately. but have the s2 now to work on.

well i'm seeling my 200sx, need a runabout for a year or so, whilst the S2 fund is amassed - so its either a £500 shitbag diesel, or £900 of 5pot fun

There are more aggressive cams out there, seen a few for sale in Germany. Damn expensive so i never bothered trying to get my hands on a set.

LOL. What year is the car your looking at? FYI early models upto the end of 1990 had the good 5-1 exhaust manifold, 90-91 cars had the crappy cast manifold.

In the US early models didnt have a rear anti roll bar, and 1990 onwards models did. Not sure if thats the same for UK/Euro spec cars.

90 G-plater so sounds like its the earlier manifold. good news

If that you get the car and it has not got the manifold there is one in the back of this months PPC magazine for sale, just make sure that it has the downpipe and heat shield as well. They do make a bit of difference especially with a nice exhaust

They are a great car - not as much oomf as the S2, but lots less to go wrong ! A seriously comfortable motorway cruiser with nearly the same handling dynamics as the S2.

I had a light blue CQ20V in the past - for about 4 yrs - only grief was the ISV. If anybody knows the wherabouts of IDZ6320 it would be great to know if still alive - it was moved to mainland circa 1997 and prolly got an english plate then.
