    luk clutch in mrc'd s2

if you've going to renew your clutch in a remapped s2 i might look elsewhere than luk.i've just had a standard one fitted and it still slips.i've got no receipts for a clutch but it's hard to believe the old one was original, but it was ok for a ages after Minhea worked his magic on it(maybe a 18 months ago) ,then in fifth it started slipping in the high torque range, and just before i got it changed it wouldn't bite on a launch.so just keep your options open.i was trying to get hold of a sachs but i wanted it doing quick.but 6 weeks down the line,i wish i'd searched harder for one 'cos he had the box away getting third gear sorted so i had the time to source a sachs.i'll just have to keep the revs high out of the torque band.it sounds better any way.

Got to admit I was looking at an LUK one when rebuilding mine. Then I took the old one out and saw it was an LUK and had hardly any wear on it and it used to slip like a swine on hard acceleration.....

So I had one made for me by a friend of a friend for 300nicker. rated at over 450lb of torque so job done...

LUK = pants for a tune car...

LUK pressure plates must be OK as Centreforce and SPEC both use standard LUK pressure plates in thier upgrade packages.

Remember that this is what they start with before it is reworked to handle increased horsepower demands. Most likely the LUK pp is the only one that readily available.

I don't believe they are reworked by centerforce or spec. If you examine them closely then you will see that the pressure plates have not been modified, just painted, and in the case of SPEC had the LUK markings ground off. THey may be different pressure plates form the LUK range with the same dimmensions but increased clamp loads but they are still just out of the box LUK items.

Now if they are plates with the same dimensions but uprated clamp loads then it would be useful to know what standard plates are used as a pressure plate from LUK direct is in the order of £90 rather than the spec/centreforce price. I have spoken to LUK but they do not have a publicly available reference that lists dimensions and clamp loads.

Most aftermarket clutch pressure plates for the S2 are reworked OE items. Having checked with a few suppliers they use the OE springs and have them heat treated to uprate the characteristics, they also use springs from other plates that use have the same dimensions but higher specs. If you have a pressure plate you want tesing to check the loading, you could try Precision Clutch located just outside Yeovil. They were very helpful when we got them to uprate a few S2 pressure plates. Unfortunately, I found my RS2 setup would slip their plate, the Sachs item and the LUK plate. The Clutchnet carbon unit was good, but it rattled like hell at idle. I'm hoping the Spec clutch will be as good as the Clutchnet unit, but without the rattle.

I've got an LUK in mine and I must admit it does not feel that it could handle a lot of power. Mine had started to slip if I tried to launch it fairly quickly so I put a new one in. LUK was all that was available, Sachs have been on back order at GSF and Euro car parts for ages now. The one that came out was an LUK and it looked like new and like I said the new one still feels a little delicate, my cars only running around 260bhp too.
