If it just for a cheap track day car then go for the 924S - all the benefits of the later 944 but in a muc lighter body. Cars are generally a lot cheaper to buy. Steer clear of the early 2.7 16's - they have weak timing chains and are generally not a well developed uint. Save for a 3.0l S2 - much better designed and performing engine. However, still quite expensive to maintain and tune. Obviously the real performance 944 is the Turbo. Robist engines that can easliy go to 300bhp+ without serious mods. Make for a VERY fast car. But expect to pay a hefty premium for a good one. I'd probably plump for a later 2.7 8v Lux as the best alrounder, depending on finance. Always buy the best maintained with the most documentation that you can buy, regardless of ages or miles.1990 Peugeot 205 1.9 Turbo 192bhp - 190lbs/ft
