    IT question

Computer seems very slow lately and trying to work out whats up?

CPU is up and down to 18% to 60% when loading pages or on youtube

    Physical memory
    Total is 523760
    Available 29336
    System Cache 104336

Have cleared all the cookies ,scandisk so on

When i checked the processes there seems to be loads on there which might be making the PC run slow but not sure which ones to stop?

    Any ideas ?

    cheers

What version of Windows are you running?
      Download HiJackThis from here

Select "do a system scan and save a log file" then attach the saved log file to this post and I'll have look see whats running/installed for you.

Also download and install StartupList from here.
Run this, save the log file and attach it too.

believe me at least make the jump to 1gb of RAM, recommended minimum IMO

Download Startup CPL and make sure nothing is starting up with windows that you don't want

Also either download Hijack This! and post the process log or open the task manager and a take a picture of it (with as much open as possible), also go to the menu > view > columns and check the box virtual memory size as that will also show what's taking up virtual memory.

Please don't rely on msconfig as it will not catch everything. With Startup CPL, it not only lists what is in the start folder (both common and user), but what is in the HKCU and HKLM as well. I install it on every computer that I build for mates. Puts itself right in the control panel, takes up virtually no space.

Fair enough, although I tend to use regedit for viewing/editing the registry hives.

A quick glance shows that you are running way too much for a system with only 512mb RAM. Having Acrobat, iTunes, Roxio Easy CD creator Drag-to-Disk (which hogs memory like god knows what!) is in itself some of the biggest contributors. Also along with the fact you have Roxio and Nero installed and running at the same time can cause some slow downs as well.

Indexing service is something I personally disable as it can up major resources as well, but each to his own.

                  Quick things I also noticed:
realsched.exe - is related to realplayer. Unless you watch that it shouldn't be necessary.
-Windows Defender and Bulldog - also major system hogs.
-Ati2evxx.exe - not to familar with ATI cards but would assume there would not need to be 2 of these processes running.

When I had 512mb of RAM I streamlined my windows to the point that I would boot with only ~120mb used. I made the decision to go to 2gb and never looked back, made an absolute world of difference.

Mate I would suggest starting first at the Startup CPL, really sit down and think aboue what you really need in order to start up, and then we can go from there.

That little nifty program makes it jokingly easy to control your startup and see no reason why everyone should not have a copy of it on their computer. You can muck about in your registry of course, but this is a foolproof method.

Knight rider the program I posted is very to use

Made in Notion, the connected workspace where AI agents and teams organize docs, projects and knowledge together.

Click where it says "Download Startup Control Panel 2.8"

                        Install it

Now in your control panel you will have a new icon called "Startup"

Just install the Startup Control Panel software and then select the Control panel from the start menu then select the Startup icon. Click on the different tabs and then uncheck any of the programs you no longer wish to run at startup.

I recommend uninstalling Roxio, remove Windows defender from startup as it useless.
I'd also get rid of Real Player and Quick Time as they are heavy on resources.

Go to this site and run an online spyware scan :http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

Do the same to check your system for virii here : http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

When you done, restart your pc for the changes to take effect and hopefully your pc will be running a bit better.
