You and me both, I never liked that "blade" thing either! Looks like it's meant to slide out of the car like some kind of drawer where you can put the luggage!

This was an excellent episode - Clarkson really loved the R8 didn't he - and did you see how high up the Speed Wall it was - just behind the Koennigsegg?
Rather alarmed by the photos of the burned up v10 powered one though, eyrugh

Classic stuff with the boats too, that was amazing stuff. No way I would have gone in the English channel in any of those Heath Robinson contraptions

the R was properly impressive round track, actually looked slow because it was SO tidy.

WTF was up with the drag race tho? an extra 70bhp is more than enough to make up for the transmission losses, and with 4x4 the R8 should have been off the line first!

no gen on smoking in the workplace?

The boats were funny, but non of them had learned NAYTHING since last time, so they were all still ****. The pickup is a promising idea, but could actually be made to work well with a minutes forethought!

It's about power to weight ratio, The porsche is lighter even though it has less bhp so less inertia.

I hope they track the 5 litre V10 bi-turbo when it comes out, same engine is in the ne w RS6 I believe.

Clarkson does talk c@ck sometimes though. The R8 style is simply divine!

LMAO at Hammond having to admit the R8 was a better car than his beloved Porsches!

TBH i wasnt that keen on last nights episode, its def gone for more of the entertainment stakes rather that a hardcore car enthusiasts program. Dont get me wrong, still watch it but would prefer more focus on driving cars rather than the b*llshit.

I think the R8 is a stunning car and a massive statement for Audi but im surprised they compared it against Hammonds (own personal) 2S 997. At least 5th gear pitched it against a more suitable Porsche - a 4S with p/pack, but with the money the Audi is, should be up against GT3/turbo anyway.

The boat thing was f*king hilarous tho...

Did like the fact they did something constructive with the episode i.e. the boats but was a bit like before so would have preferred more challenges i.e. when they bought the supercars etc. Those was good episodes.

I think the main reason that TG is so successful is that they actively took it away from being a car show to being an entertainment programme based around things with wheels and the personalities (real or created) of the presenters. Earnest car reviews (a la Fifth Gear, or even how TG used to be) are just plain dull tv to be honest.

I really enjoyed the fun-poking at the current BBC thing of disclosure (Ferarri on the Moon!), and the pipe-smoking was even better. I'm sure their get out clause will be that "they didn't inhale"!

A fine piece of entertainment, that fantastic analogy to Keira Knightley had me in stiches. Just yummy - the car I mean. I'm posting this with a view of black R8 parked up and gleaming - with carbon blade - much nicer than the high contrast blade shown last night.

As for the antics across the channel - just hilarious - what must the poor locals on that French beach have been thinking ? LOL

The moment they landed on the french beach was hilarious.

Regarding the R8 off the line, does it suffer from the same condition as the gallardo/murcielargo in that if you drop the clutch as silly rpm it just ends up in a smelly mess??

If it had been live they would probably have been thinking of jumping in the Channel after watching saturdays rugby!!

Im perfectly aware of power to weight ratios, but the bottom line is the audi will have a greater dynamic power to weight ratio as it leaves the line, because the power either car has available at that point is not the power of the engine, but the power it can actually deliver to the road.

No way in hell the porsche should outlaunch it
