    URQ info and S2 request

As strange as this may seem, you never know what info is lurking inside the heads of the S2 group :-)

A few questions I have been asked that I have no clue to the answers:
    --------------------------------
I am starting to rebuild the RR this weekend. Any ideas what I can do with
Gearbox, Prop and Diff? I would consider 6 speed conversion but would also
like to know if there is an affordable way of getting the standard stuff
rebuilt? Do you know of any accurate references for gearbox/diff ratios? I
may consider the V6tt gearbox but not sure of the gear ratios and final
    drive ratio?
    --------------------------------

Can anyone shed any answers or suggestions for this info request please?

    Also....

As anyone got a whole front assembled leg from an S2 'lying around' I need to borrow one if I can for a few weeks to get some dimensions etc. Ive got a spare 16" Avus I need a leg and hub etc assembled I can borrow. Will need to be within collection distance from Kent as I'm sure couriers would not like to move that about!!

Any answers / suggestioon very gratefully received

Notice that i am now full grandad status!!

Anyway, the RR box is totally different to the s2 one. The UR uses a much stronger box, the s2 uses a box that was designed for a non turbo quattro! hence the probs with 2nd gear, the actual gear is too narrow to take the torque. 6 speeder in the s2 is a bit stronger, but they changed the box in the RS2 to take the extra grunt. The 6 speed from a tt wont fit. It uses a different type of quattro system and the engine is transverse. A 6 speed from an s2 may fit as the casings are slimmer.

I know that to change a 3b 5 speed car to aby 6 speed, you need different flywheel and clutch, front subframe and gearchange linkage!!!!!

I looked into doing mine and decided against it

I would recommend a company in somerset to rebuild the drivetrain, (gearbox and diff), they are VW/AUDI specialist box rebuilders. They are called Gear Change in Bridgewater.

They did my box and they are very good. Comes with a 12 month/12000 mile warranty aswell.

    Hope this helps m8

Yeah, I was gonna suggest that same company for the box as i have heard good things about them in th past and the advertise monthly in Audi Driver mag.

Tom, just out of interest, what did they charge for the box rebuild?

      Cheers,

I do have a brand new front wishbone you can borrow if need be. Got it on eBay ages back on the cheap. Don't have a spare strut or hub carrier though...

Bear in mind this is trade prices, i paid about £550+VAT!! Fitting was free cos i did it. Expect to be charged for about 5-6 hours work. Its an easy enough job to do, so any GOOD garage can do it, nothing complex just a lot of unbolting/bolting up.

Gearchange will actually remove and refit the box aswell. Warranty is great, i work about 20-25 miles from them and they picked the car up from work when the driveshaft oil seals started to leak within the warranty priod. No quibble, just picked it up and left me with another car, brought it back the next day!!!! Cant say fairer than that.

That's a real nice touch Tom, really nice to hear that kind of service still exists. That does it, I'm moving to the West country, where men are men and sheep are scared.

                  Martyn,

The transmission tunnel on an RR ur-q is too narrow for a six speed box from an S2 - you would need to widen it. I've heard of an S4tt six speed box being shoehorned in.

Gear ratios are available from the autocar articles on my site

Are you sure about that? I had been told that the UR's was wider so it could take the stronger box. The S2 got the narrow trans. tunnel, so in turn it got the non turbo, slimmer gearbox?

But then again you may well be right
