  • B6 S4 OE Exhaust Removal - What are my chances ?

Anybody have any great experience to share for removal of OE exhaust on the B6 S4 ?

I need it removed in order to get the prop shaft out of the way for an oil seal change at the very end of the gearbox - a common enough failure sadly on this hateful 8 - I only have a slight drip, but of course it drops onto one of the CATs when the car is hot so you get that unmistakable stink of hot tranny fluid when sitting at traffic lights (easy tiger).

Seems to me the downpipes are one piece from where it meets the header (via a primary CAT) all the way to the main CAT - after which, there is bolted clamp (rusted like hell of course) where it joins the rest of the system. Trouble is that you ideally need the CATs out of the way for clear sight of the rear end of the gearbox to pull the prop shaft spigot thing out and change the seal.

Its possible that by removing everything after the CAT on one side that I can get enough access up there, but its going to be a total bee-atch with very limited access - even if I can borrow a ramp for a day.

I should really be dropping the whole motor & tranny so I can sort the startup rattle, but I cannot even begin to get my head around that - one big project at a time is more than enough for me.

Exhaust is easy to remove. Worst case you will need to cut off the sleeve joints. Downpipes are a different matter - cun t of a job.

<SIGH> was afraid you would say that. That motor is practically shoe-horned into that B6 chassis. Gonna have to recce the job properly on a ramp and reckon on a pair of new sleeve joints at the CAT... and hope that gives me enough room to change the stupid seal.

The main issue is access down the back of the heads to the primary lambdas, and access up to the downpipe to manifold joints.
To be fair I did them on stands, so a two post ramp would definitely make life easier. The car was 5 years and 50k younger then. Small hands and wobble sockets and hope nothing rounds off.
From memory you need to remove the rear gearbox mounting girdle and lower the back of the subframe.
