Whats everyones thoughts? nice and cheap but with possible hidden gremlins.

How good are the 2.8 engines? compared with say, a standard 7A?

How rigid are these compared to the Coupe chassis? also do they weigh more/less?

The engines are OK but not as good as the the five cylinder , the chassis is better than the coupe because the rear suspension is B4 as opposed to B3 on the coupe.
Weight is a little up on the coupe due to rear doors I think.

Had the 2.8 in my A8, was a solid engine, dont think it weighed much either, sounded quite nice, bit of a wheezebag tho. nowhere near as workable as the I5.

The engine in the 80 is the same as the one used in the MK3 golf VR6. Pushed out 174bhp when new. The engine in the A8 is the newer one as fitted in the A4 & A6, 196bhp I think.

          The 12v 2.8 and 2.6 V6 fitted to the 80 is NOT a VR6 unit.
Probably the longet S2 project in history EVER!

            This is a 12v 2.8 V6 with a proper V-configuration, not a narrow angle VR motor.

The VR6 was never used in longitudinally mounted situations like the Audi variants of the B3/4 chassis especially with Quattro. It did find its way into the B3/4 Passats, but transverse with the Syncro 4wd system.

I used to have a 2.8quattro coupe, they have almost identical performance to the 7A.
I found the V6 is a tad thirtier but not much. they sound nice and pull very smoothly, but seem a bit lazier than the 7A, you have to wind them up, but once you get the revs up they do chip along nicely. Mine had a cambelt tensioner failure, which I believe also happened to Paul S2central so this is something worth making sure is in perfect order.

I might just hold out for a 90q 7A then,

There's a tatty black one that may be going not far from me, the current owner bought it off a bloke who had it in a garare unused for two years, he put some fuel and electricity into it and it came back to life and sailed through an MOT! might be a lucky car.

Wasn't going to contribute to this thread, bit after seeing your reply above post # 9, I felt I wanted to share my experience and throw my tuppence in.

Buy this one rather than an old 2 years parked up tatty Coupe.

I have one of these, a silver 1992 B4 Saloon quattro 2.8v6 manual and it is lovely. Keeping it to convert to ABY 5 cylinder at some stage in the future.

Very practical big boot, rear seats fold, nice in silver, quattro, colour codes mirrors and door handles like an S2, interior can be changed entirely to leather or just the wood inserts swopped for carbon, and very discrete. May have front and rear electric windows if you're lucky as well as a factory sun roof.

Already put a silver S2 bumper and ellipsoid headlights on mine. Have carbon and S2 sills to be put onto it, as well as S2 hubs and 16" Avus. I presume you have read the Sooty thread. Should be mandatory on this forum for all of the info it conveys and experience it imparts.

Busy with the three S2 Avants first. But from your prospective, I personally would encourage you to go the route of this silver saloon, rather than a Coupe.

Did you see the green B4 Saloon S2 psted on the forum recently, it was shown parked outside under the cover of a canopy of large building / warehouse. It was gorgeous.

I'm sure someone will post a link? Look at any photo of any silver S2 to imagine what this silver saloon will look like.

If you need a Coupe, save and buy an S2 ABY Coupe. I know that's easier said that than done, but less grief in the long run.

But as you hopefully already know and can stomach, anything to do with an S2 and the like can be a costly but rewarding activity.

Better stop now, said more than enough.

(Sorry, just revisited the ad, I see this car has no wood inserts to change).

                    HTH.

Thanks for the advice, btw the one for sale near me is a 7A 90 Saloon in black, Its from a fellow over on classic-audi. The reason it appeals is they're quite a bit rarer than the coupes and also the stiffer chassis and extra practicality.

                        Ah Coxy's car !
Having seen it at ADI last year.... it looked terrific - except it's black !
I loved my 2.8 quattro ( saloon), very smoooth and did need winding up. regularly did 30+ mpg and 32-34+ mpg on longer quick runs, didn't like stop start in winter 24-26 tops!
Both nice motors, very different though.
