Cat C write off, the insurer deemed it uneconomical to repair, it may be put back on the road legally.
It isn't always that bad as if you crash a car and it is worth £3000 and you smash both headlights and bumper and bonnet are bent then the repair bill could easily be over £1500 with paint and labour and the insurance company would most likely write it off as is the norm if it is more than 50% of the value of the car.
In this case however the seller says it was declared cat C in 1998 and says, 'does it matter at this age', my take on this is if it had just been declared cat C now in 2012 then it wouldn't have taken much damage as the value is relatively low but in 1998 when an S2 would have been worth quite a lot of money it must have been smashed to **** to get a cat C write off.
Even with it's low mileage I would think it's worth less than half what he is asking due to the cat C.
169 HP ? Maybe the turbo fell of when it was wrote off and they didn't bother fitting another
Ten large for that? Looks average condition to me at best. More like 4k on a good day.

prep looks average at best and as you say looks more like a £4-5k motor. He does say he's no idea where to price it but £10k is way over.
The thing that gets me is he says, 'ive been in the trade for forty years and haven't a clue what its true value is' , WTF, so 40 years selling cars and he does not no how to determine there value, what a complete lying cockend :corey: .
