Plate transfer, if going on another vehicle, took two weeks when I did one last year.

      Thanks Biggs,

If I let him take the car without transferring the ownership via teh V5 don't I leave myself open to speeding fines etc, as it'll still be in my name?

It's not legally drivable by now as the MOT expired on Wednesday.

He's planning to use it as a donor in any case (which is a bit sad) and says he'll not be driving it anywhere and that I can keep the V5 etc anyway, but I'm worried about the liability issues, and I'd rather he dealt with the formalities of actually scrapping it.

I would like to get it all over with & the car off my drive, but a bit nervous about the DVLA losing me my plate.

Is there a safe way to secure my plates and hand the car over before getting the papers back?

The plate will just be going on a retenton certificate for now, don't want to put it on the cabrio just yet as that's also old, if the MOT in a month or so is OK I'll put them onto it then.

Err, I think you may have problems transferring the plate if the MOT has expired, I'm pretty sure a vehicle has to have a current certificate if you want to change the plate or put it on retention.

I dont thik it does (or it didnt used to be). It had to be taxed or have been taxed (by you) int he last 12 months.

Only needs MOT if pre 1960 I think.

I did ask the DVLA about this and thier advice was

Do not transfer the V5 - yet
Send off the Reg transfer form, the expired MOT, the V5, & the dosh
once it all comes back, switch plates it's OK to go

Which I guess is the safe way

A mate reckons it's not a problem to try & do it all togther, but I'm not yet 100% convinced, and think I'm going to have to wait it out unless anyone can say another way.

He ll need docs when weighing in the shell if his local yard is like mine
I took an avant shell couple weeks ago and they checked it against v5
                  Wasn't worth it for £48!

Hi, sorry for the late reply on this.

In the past ive done as such- kept the V5 MOT and tax disc and let the buyer drive the car away and forwarded the paperwork to the buyer afterwards.

With your car having no MOT i dont know, if and how this would differ, but reading the comments some folk have said it would.

Best to be safe in your case and sell the car once you have the retention cert in hand.

**DEFINITELY DO NOT TRANSFER THE V5 TO NEW BUYER- YOU WILL LOSE YOUR PLATE!**
