if you have 4syl car...its some tricky( some of the audis have 2 set of boltpattern in the tranny , for the 4 and 5syl)
but if the car are a 5 syl( ng,3b,or 1b) a five pot diesel will run right in.....
pssst: a 1z can be tuned easy to 230hp....you need 12mm parts in the fuelpump and some 0520 injektors and a bigger turbo( garret vnt 20 or some bigger) and IC......and softvare
there are some film at the youtube of tuned seat toledos( they use also the 1Z( 1,9tdi)

If it was me I'd look into the 2.5 V6 Audi engine. It really is a magnificent beast. I ran a 155Bhp model remapped at 185 Bhp and it was amazing.

Top mpg was 50 mpg and generally at 90 mph on a motorway it returned 42mpg.

The torque was amazing, it didn't rattle like a diesel and in 160,000 km it never needed anything doing at all. Not a single glowplug, seal or even a top up of oil. I used to just change the oil every 16,000 km and that was it. With the 6 speed box 108mph is just 3,000 rpm.

Only thing I would say is mate it to a 4wd box if possible, 2 wheels just can't cope with the torque in any sensible way. Wheel spin in 3rd in the wet was normal and 2nd in the dry was standard.

The 5pot diesels are very good, the V6's are step up again. Simply put, the V6 was the best diesel engine around when it was released and I'd say it is still up there. Coming from a BMW 6 pot to the Audi was a revelation...

        5 pot

Use the 5 pot if you want to use a diesel as several have already suggested. It will at least sound right with the usual off beat warble and you know the 5 pot block fits straight in. Use the 6 speed gearbox from the old A6 140TDi and with a bit of work to get it to 180-200bhp it will be every bit as quick as a standard 3b S2. I drove one of the 140bhp 5 cylinders on a few occasions some yeas ago and was impressed, they sounded just like the petrol 5 when on full throttle and 6th was over 30mph/1000rpm.
There are also issues with early V6 diesels up to 2002, something to do with premature cam lobe wear, so avoid.
Was told last year that someone had fitted a 4.0TDi into a series 2. Now that would be seriously quick, though the amount of work involved must be enormous.

i will NOT recomend the v6 diesels( spec the older one -98) they DO have some prob with the cam and lifters, and some have bad fuel ratio too
i think you have been lucky@sheppardnias with this engine....
          5syl are my engine

Perhaps I was lucky BUT I'd buy one tomorrow. It was a far better engine than the 4 cyl PD 130 I have now and was better to drive than any other engine I've tried.

I've heard of VERY early engines having issues but not the latter ones and not the PD160 engines.

% cylinders sound nice but the V6 has it's own sound qualities too... If you like sounding like a tank, at least.....

My tupence worth. I owned an AKE A4 2.5 tdi quattro sport 180 for 18 months. I wouldn't use it for a conversion personally i would go for either a 3.0 V6 tdi, much better injection setup or a 140 5 cylinder if you want power. but dont overlook the 130pd 1.9, it can go to silly power fairly easy. The V6 sounds good nice range of torque and a V6 soundtrack, very laggy up to 1800 rpm, expensive and temperamental injection system. When it works its great but have a look around they are a good package in the B6 A4 quattro sport but its just not got the solid reliability the 5 cylinder is/was. However the revised 2.7 and 3.0 TDi are a big step up.

I went to a 530d Msport now which is much more of a torque monster, the 3.0 Audi V6 unit is every bit as strong. But guessing you will pay handsomely for one of those. on economic reasons alone i would go with a 5cylinder, makes it a more feasible option, and if you want to move forward a bit a 130PD lump

PumpeDuse enginse have lots and lots of power potential... I hate diesels but I was studying them yesterday and there is a real engineering under that engine! The V6 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 89.9 or what ever will be too heavy for your car... go for a 1.9pd! and use a Coupe NOT S2 please!

                  Update: 2.5 5cyl! of even the 2.5 R5 from the T4van with 185hp!!!

I think that T2Andy's mate has made a quattro coupe with a 5 cylinder 2.5tdi engine in it. Either that or he turned the 2.5 tdi into a stroker.

the VW Tvan lump is 174bhp but note its a transverse mounting, so it presents its own set of issues.

Oh.. I thought the R5 TDI on the T4 was the same engine! Well... on my opinion, use a 5cyl diesel on a Coupe Quattro to not lose the "soul"!

I'd also use the 5cyl engine, AAT or AEL from C4 100/A6. I have an A6 C4 AEL quattro as a daily driver. Fuel consumption ~6,8l/100km dunno how that translates to MPG. Dyno'd it for fun, 153hp/320Nm, (figures are corrected engine power/torque) dead stock, driven 450k kilometers. Consumes no oil other than diesel (heh).
The stock fuel pump has 11mm plunger so ~250-280hp is possible with bigger injectors, turbo etc. little tuning. The stock turbo is good for something like 200hp. Should be much easier to fit than a V6 tdi. The earlier v6 tdis have the cam problems and many are experiencing also burnt fuel pump controllers. The v6 is a nice engine though, when it's not broken...
The multivan engines are mostly equipped with VNT turbocharger. AAT/AEL and the volvo versions are with a traditional wastegate turbo, so AAT/AEL ecu does not have the VNT controlling feature. However the multivan ecu is PnP. AAT has a solid flywheel, as the AEL has dual mass thing. 7a etc flywheel can be used the same way as in the AAN etc.

                            have a look on vwsport.com

there is a guy running a 5 pot diesel compound charged for around 400whp.
