    A80 1.9tdi Heating up slowly?

    Hi guys,

Just another niggle with my new Dag Dag.

It is slow to heat up in the morning and takes a good 10 - 15mins of solid driving before is it fully warm. Should I be expecting to change the thermostat to sort this out? I think the coolant has seen better days, so I might as well do that while I refresh it. (Is a 'stat change difficult on this engine?)

Anything else to look out for on the Diesel engine with reference to warming the coolant up? I am new to all this high compression malarky.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

Seem to remember that the 1.9TDI engine was one of the most thermally efficient engines around in its day - though one of the downsides of that being that it takes ages to heat up! VW even fitted an auxiliary electric heater into the Lupo 3L (which used a 3-cyl 1.2 TDI motor) as it could produce barely enough excess warmth to heat the cabin!!!

Smells like a thermostat problem to me alright. Something round 5 minutes driving (not idling) should be enough to get up to temp.

              Stephanie,
I have just replaced the water pump and the thermostat.
The car still takes about 10 miles to warm up.
Stat. can be found behind the plastic hose connector on the pump.

T'was a right pain to rid it of air locks afterwards.

As has been mentioned above, they take ages to warm up due to the thermal efficiency of the engine. Some of them have an additional glow plug heater in the coolant pipes to the matrix to aid in warming the interior (mine has this).

                @Matt,

And to think I ribbed you for acting like a girl with your dagdag Stephanie, certainly takes the crown (sorry tiara) in this case

We'll have to get a dagdag meeting arranged. We'll show these new comers how you strip and fix these old buses. There's not many jobs we haven't tried on them now.

Spink, Yours will need a new matrix, my old man has Mk1 A6 2.5 AEL, no heat at all at the mo, its down to the design of the tubes, they run up and down, get blocked and stop flowing, I have tried flushing but it dosent help...

Hi steve dont be worried about the car taking ages to warm up i was having a vibration problem with mine and went through the car from nose to tail replacing everything from mounts top shockers subframe bushes turbo injectors you name it it was done one of the problems i thought could be causing it was the slow warm up of the engine it would take ages to heat up so i changed the thermostat and nothing changed when i use to work at the airport which is about 10-15 mins away the car would of just reached full working temp
as long as the temp reaches about the middle then all is fine

                        cheers Raj

Mine takes roughly ten minutes to warm up too. Was a bit on the chilly side for a while setting off from work on Tuesday night in the balmy -8 temps.
That coupled with the fact I need to fix the heater control so that air (of any temp) will blow on the screen instead of me

LMAO, mine will only go feet or screen which means you have to lean over the dash or huddle in the footwell!

It sounds as though my car is completely normal then, and if I can just fix the control k*** I might actually get some decent heat into the cabin. It hasn't been nearly so bad the last couple of mornings with no frost either....
