you should try and get the 2.5tdi. that is what i have, 5 cylinder 6 speed. it is an excellent car, much quieter and smoother than my S2. The wife gets 40mpg around town I get 34ish ( heavy foot) but can easy get over 40mpg on a run. I also have mine chipped to around 175bhp with no reduction in economy. unless you boot it of course. It is just about fast toooo.

I have 140k on the clock and you would never know. they are pretty cheap but hard to find low ish miles.

      Paul,

I've been running a 1994 1Z estate now for around 10K miles. 171K recorded miles - paid £1300 for it last April.
Does around 630miles to a tank ( 60 litres ) whether I thrash it or not!!
Only complaints, it failed the MOT last month on...........a rear number plate light bulb!!

Seriously though, things I'd check are:condition of coolant as head gaskets can go at this mileage ( saw a couple with traces of oil in expansion tank ), wishbone bushes and I had to change the lower balljoints. Rest of it as per everone else's comments.
      Cheers,
      nick

Jees thats good mileage alright... OMG - how old and sensible do I sound !

No but really I hate the S2 stuck in traffic - just pissing petrol and money away - glazing up the bores - never mind the near misses with the brain-dead nature of other drivers in rush hour

Cheers all for the feedback !

            Just gotta love those Tdi's!

            Hiya Paul,

Check out this Canadian Website for all things VAG Tdi, it is a really excellent source of help and information..........just like this site

Fred's TDI Page and Forums. Also called TDICLUB.com, a great place to make other Dieselheads interested in the VW Group's TDI (Turbo Direct Injection) Diesel including Audi. Forums, news and more...

When I got my Balsa Wood Constructed 1998 A4 1.9Tdi quattro Avant 110PS I resolved a number of minor issues by searching and posting etc.

The 1Z is almost bulletproof but the usual maintenance issues apply............but do yourself a big favour and get a Tuning Box or Chip

            Cheers

            Dave

WHY (I hear you ask) ?

Cos for the 1st time ever I am faced with a driven commute where somebody else isn't paying for the petrol. That and I don't want to yomp a lot of miles on the S2... and I really need it off the road this winter for some long needed TLC.

I figured on the 80 TDi as they are dirt cheap to buy and run, have the bullet proof suspension (versus the balsa wood construction of the 'nicer' A4), and are wonderfully anonymous looking and unattractive to scumly thieving types who might be lurking where I have to park it every day...

Don't even know the engine code yet - its 90bhp right ?
I have no clue what ECU it runs so I dunno if it can be chipped or not...

Did the 80 TDi come in Saloon only or was there an official Avant also ?
