What could possibly be the reason to do that?

S4 engine and running gear will be donated to a coupe quattro V6, shame to scrap the S4

Better scrap the coupe and save s4.

It can be done, only downside is the 1.9tdi engine would struggle with the weight of the s4 unless modded to cope.

some of the trannys DOES have the double boltpattern..( first sign, is the 3holes in the top of the bellhousing, instead of only 2) and the engine monts from a a6 with 1,8t will may fit.then the front spring may change, to softer verson...

you will find some of the member at this forum have a s6 plus 97, the change to a 2,5tdi, but the rest are the very same..(5pot !)

better to swap on 2.5TDI. It is easy with that. Have done few and know many projects running. With 1.9TDI you will have many problems.

engine is good. fitment is difficult if there was 5cyl engine and you want to swap 4cyl. Engine mountings different and in different places.

So it's a question of moving the mountings plater further down the chassis legs and aligning shafts to hubs, shouldn't be too difficult, plenty of room to work with I suppose

Engine mountings different and in different places ; use the 1,8t engine mounts... prob solved... se the tranny bellhousing.. the 2 upper bolt holes( are actually 3 holes.. = the will fit 4 pot too... prob solved..

Someone in Ontario Canada who had an UrS6 with a blown engine and Beetle TDi with body issues made this exact swap.

Here is a link to the post and video when he just got it running in Dec. just before Christmas:
