  • 80 tdi alternator belt keeps shredding!

It's done this 4 times in the last 3 months, i've replaced the alternator pulley, and the larger pulley connected to the crankshaft, although that came off a 99 passat, could it be causing the problem? Also changed the housing with the shaft that the belt runs on also!

Could be the bearings in the alternator seizing?

Someone mentioned that actually! Might just track down an alternator!

Would there be play visible in the alternator?

A disconnected alternator should spin pretty freely, if the bearings are on the way out they will grumble and generally not feel nice when you pin it.

pretty sure the tensioners are prone to fail/collapse and cause this issue

                  The tensioner usually fails
