  • AEL Fuel pump Belt Snapped :(

The fuel pump timing belt on my AEL Audi C4 A6 quattro has snapped.

Where should I get a genuine replacement? and is it an easy job? Should I attempt it my self? or just get a garage to sort it?

Any idea how long the job would take if done by garage?

Is it easy to access ? or will I need to remove anything major to get to it properly?

Also, do I need to replace any tensioners along with the belt? or anything like that ?

Is there a guide anywhere I could look at?

I'm presuming this won't have damaged the engine or anything?

    Cheers..

Quite easy to do when putting everything in timing markings, could work nicely with only fitting new belt by loosing only the pulley that is on the loose side of the belt(if the pylleys are the same as on Volvo 2.5 AEL.?) If you loose up the adjustment pulley then it is harder to get the right timing, can be done by hand, but proper way is to check it with VCDS.

Just wondering,.. how can i check if the pump has seized?

I can only move it a little backwards and forwards by hand. Is this normal?

Put a spanner on it, it won't turn that easy.

If you don't have the full version of VCDS, you'll need the Audi tool to mount a DTI in the pump to zero it. There is also a special tool to tension the belt, but you can use a small weighing scale to replace this.

Might be worth checking your cambelt, they're generally changed at the same time so if one has snapped..........

if i get it wrong.. will it damage the engine at all? or is worst case scenario simply that it will it just not run?

Should the tensioners be replaced aswell?

The belt hadn't worn down on the sides or anything, it just snapped.

There doesn't seem to be much play in them.

                    no,it just wont start

they are generally a ballache to get timed back up once the timing has been lost,if you dont have the tools to do it

you can buy a dti with an adapter off ebay fairly cheaply

Well I managed to get it started. Seems to be running a little rough in the lower rev ranges. Yet it seems to start okay.

All I've done is basically put the new belt on and got it running .
                      No adjustments made or anything.

Im wondering though , if I was a tooth too far forwards or backwards , would it even run?
Is it possible for the car to even run like that? or have i been lucky and managed to get the belt in the right place?

I've not had much time/motivation for the car lately.. hence the slow progress .
I've been rover powered for the last 6 months.lol

You either need a DTI or vcds to get it exact. Tiny movements make huge differences on diesel timing. I'd defo be doing a full belt change though before it destroys something.

I had one changed at my local garage when I lived in Germany, it ran ok but the engine was noisey, took it back and they did manage to adjust the timing to get it back to normal. It was actually a small Ford dealership so guess they had no special VAG tooling.
