torx screws indicates newer type and you can't remove without causing damage.

after cutting the needle off I just pressed the old one back on. It almost works but it's like it's too deep, if you pull the needle up slightly it returns freely but there is some tension pulling it back into the face.
Is the solution going to be to get a replacement old style speedometer to rebuild?

Makes no difference with the newer style. Unfortunately I found out the hard way.
Luckily it wasn't off the S2.
This is mentioned in the cluster repair thread but you need to read through several pages of stuff to find it.

I prised mine off and luckily got away without damage then read the bit about winding them offgot two sets to do so at least now I know
