    Container to USA

Not exactly a group buy but will relly on the co-operation of everyone to pull it off.

Acidburn, Spink and myself all have requests to send stuff to the states.

The last time I got a shipping rate in 2009 was £1200 for a 40ft container.

Due to the price parcel companies charge on volumetric shipping this figure would be reached by shipping half a dozen bumpers.

So we could do with a list of US members that would be willing to share the shipping costs and a list of items that people would like to purchase from the UK to see if it is a viable option. Ideas also welcomed.....

As above, This could work quite well as i've recently got a quote for sending wheels to america and just for one wheel on its own was £83 quid cheapest so you can see how much cheaper this would be.

If people say what they want then if possible we can source the parts.

Definitely a good idea, I sold a load of stuff which cost £150 to send, would of taken up no room in a container as well !

$1200!! That's a great price. Who gave you that quote? Does that in include brokerage? When I shipped my container 4 years ago it cost just over $5300 to my door.

Having done this before I can help you out. I also have a couple of large somewhat fragile items I need to ship to Georgia. My container with my body shell came in via Brunswick, Georgia sea port on the east coast.

Naw, it wasn't the taxes. I only paid 2.5% duty on $300 for the shell. I think Schenker just took me for a ride.

I am not trying to put a damper on this, because I might take advantage of it myself.

Someone on the British end would have to co-ordinate the packing of the container. I am sure that pieces would be coming in from all parts of Europe to be packed in the container. The items would have to be itemized, and list made of all the places the items would have to be sent to once the container got to the states. Insurance would need to be taken out on all the items in the container, and the worth of all the individual bundles would have to be computed. And then purchase the insurance.

Whoever received the container in the states would have to figure a way to get the container to a particular location, so it could be unloaded and the items stored and checked for damage. If there was any damage, insurance claims would have to be submitted, by the person/persons from the shipping end. The person/persons receiving the container, would have to in turn, get shipping quotes for all the items to be shipped to various people in the states and Canada. Not an easy task. And then do the shipping.

                  Just something to think about.

I don't need anything for my CQ, but what company are you using? We ship over seas often, we use Zust Bachmeier (Swiss) and one or two others.

Would it not be cheaper to use a 20ft one? Obviously you need less to fill it too.
Any good logistics company should be able to arrange it all regarding the container.
I work for a global logistics company and we do it all the time, sadly I cannot help with any discount anymore because our export department moved to another depot

I've had a few people asking about stuff so there is interest in this as it would be ALOT cheaper to send over in bulk. One thing that would definately be cheaper to send is alloys.

I agree, but to fill a 40' one you are going to need a LOT of parts!
Which is why Id get prices for 20' too

Having just unloaded a 40ft container of slate from India - there was quite a lot of it

Good idea this, some co-ordination needed. any transport of the container at either end needs considering too as this can be a major additional expense, also "storage" charge of the container at the port can bite you too if you're not on the ball with your arrangements / negotiations.
