    The S2 Closed Season

    Hi All

The date fast approaches that the S2 takes it's winter break and is relegated to the subs bench for the winter. After all, don't want to be running it on those salty slushy roads and risking any unnecessary accidents.

My question is, as this is the first winter I have had the S2, are there any things I should do to if it is going to be off road for a long periord, currently it is going to be on my driveway, but I might get it in the garage at some point if I can be bothered to clear out all the clutter.

While it is off the road I am going to sorting a lot of the niggly things that I need to do, ie brakes and cleaning the interior out thoroughly. Then next year it will have some cash dropped on it to sort out some of the more major issues.

    Any and all advice welcomed.

    Cheers
    Kris

It might not be a 5 pot or an S2... but at least I have a 20v Turbo in my life again.

What work are you planning to do on the brakes?

Nothing too painful at this stage. Need new disks and pads at the rear for definate. Would like to do the Porsche upgrade to the front as well, but that is going to be bit further down the road when funds allow, hopefully early next year.

Why would you lay up a 4WD car for winter???? surely it's safer to drive than another car.

not with fat summer tyres they aren't - great for biiiiiiig drifts round empty car parks but the S2 is nose heavy and on a cambered road if its wet snow/packed then from experience even stationary it will just try and slide into the gutter - distinct 3b advantage, you can cancel the ABS which does at least help the braking

Yes, david is right, I had to drive mine all the way home on snow and ice just after I bought it. It is one of the scariest things I have ever done. Never again. Mine stays well and truely out of harms way in the winter.....

              Cheers,

              Steve.

It is good fun I have to admit. I got stuck in the snow a year or two back when everywhere east of the M1 was covered in snow. was great fun trying to drive home. putting the diff lock on helped though

Steve - you should have fitted those winters i bought off u.....

Actually have only just taken them off the car (a6) - u just cant kill a set of pirelli snowsports i gave up with 4mm left and will use them to get me down to the alps this coming season and then replace them with freshies while i am in the valley, about 20% cheaper

if you are going to take it off-road over the winter I wouldnt leave it exposed on the drive - otherwise it'll take nearly as much of a pounding from the elements as it would if you were using it!

most of the stuff to do is more for when it gets back on the road again (I would for example do an oil change and a brake fluid change after that sort of lay off). Also dont leave a large amount of petrol in it since after that sort of sit it will be pretty useless and you'll want to dilute it with some fresh.

Oh and the brakes will probably want at least a skim after - other wise it will be bloody hard to stop for a while!

A lot of my reasoning comes down to the fact that I start a new career very soon, and the first year is going to mean I am travelling all over the county for training. I don't really want to put that sort of mileage on the S2, plus I will be on a lower rate of pay for the first 32 weeks.

I realise that the 4wd would make it useful in the poor conditions, however I would rather damage something that I didn't really care about than the S2.
