Right this is a fairly long job, its not as easy as it first appears. As I wanted to change the water pump and the cambelt at the same time, it took longer, and more stuff had to be removed. I will list in steps as its easier that way.
1) Remove bumper and crossmember
2) Remove slam panel and aux. rad (if fitted)
3) Slacken Crankshaft pulley bolt, but dont remove yet
4) Remove all aux. belts (PAS, AC, alt) and timing belt upper cover
5) Align the crankshaft timing marks either through the gap in the bell housing or by the notches on the front lower cover, check that the cam mark lines up on the rocker cover.
6) Holding the camshaft with a suitable tool, slacken the 24mm bolt.
7) Remove the crankshaft pulley and the lower casing, slacken the water pump and remove the old timing belt. If it going to be reused then mark with chalk the direction of rotation.
8) Now remove the cam pulley.
9) Take off the inlet pipe and the throttle body and move the breather tube out of the way. There is a small breather hose that goes into the rear of the cam cover.
10) Remove the HT leads, and undo the rocker cover bolts and lift off.
11) Undo the camshaft bearing nuts 1 turn at a time starting from the outside and working inwards (opposite to tightening) Recover the nuts, ensuring that you dont drop any!!! The bearings are marked 1 -10 and number 1 is the front one on the exhaust side.
12) Once all the bearings are off remove cams. Now remove hyd. tappets and decompress them.
13) Now is the time to take off the distributor cap and remove the plastic cover inside it. Using atorch and a mirror, check to see if the two lines are alinged.
14) Re-fit tappets and cams and tighten to 15Nm, with the cams installed and aligned, re-check that distributor setting. If in-correct, remove dist. and put in right place! Der!
15) Re-fit everything in the reverse order.
I think thats about it.
