Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor info for future reference

The link below might help somebody. It's in the FAQ that I developed for the AAN but should be applicable to the 3B, ABY and ADU.

    http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/150047.phtml

There is a circular reference back to S2 info so it might be something you already know (or not)

Anyway, hope this helps somebody sometime.

    From Audiworld
This G42 IAT, P/N 034 905 379B, is important to performance because the ECU needs air temps to decide about boost, fuel and timing. Follow the link for more information.

    * Link to more IAT info with diagrams and text including testing

Same thing. The first link is through the AAN FAQ that I thought some people here might want to investigate.

        I've just VAG-COM'd my S2 and it threw up two fault codes;

        VAG-COM Version: Release 311.2-N

        Chassis Type: 8C - Audi 80 B4
        Scan: 01,02,03,08,15,26

        Address 01 -------------------------------------------------------
        Controller: 895 907 551 A
        Component: 2.2l R5 MOTR.RHV HS D02
        Coding: PMC 1
        2 Faults Found:
        00523 - Intake Air Temp Sensor (G42)
        30-10 - Open or Short to B+ - Intermittent
        00513 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
        03-00 - No Signal
        Readiness: N/A

        Address 03 -------------------------------------------------------
        Controller: 4A0 907 379
        Component: Bremsen-Elektronik
        Coding: 0265103050
        Shop #: BB 23836
        No fault code found.

        Skipping Address 15-Airbags

        End -------------------------------------------------------

So the AIT is one of them (G42) and the Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is the other. Should I go ahead and replace these? The reason that I ask is that I cleared the fault codes from the ECU's memory and they didn't show up when I restarted the engine and tested for asecond time.

On your IAT - it might just be a flaky connection rather than the device itself. Follow the info at S2central on it - theres a graph showing resistance vs temperature - that will tell you if the chap is spec or not.

Where is the IAT sensor on the ABY engine?

Rear of IM - on the upper east side - can't miss it... Just north of the throttle body - has a 2-pin connector.

i've just bought a PLX IAT sensor to monitor intake temps, but rather than drill an additional sensor into the intake manifold, could i piggyback off the stock sensor?

not being particularly knowledgeable about electronics, i'm not sure whether connecting up to the stock sensor might screw it up?

                http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=18871692

                any advice?

                cheers,

You won't hurt the sensor but if I understand you correctly, you'd end up with the PLX unit and Motronic both connected to the one sensor and as both of them will send a voltage out to measure the resistance of the sensor the two will interfere with each other so you're likely to get incorrect readings both by the PLX and the Motronics ECU.
