    Wanted: Guide for Removing ABS

I'm going to do this while my car is in the garage, so I was going to write a guide for it. Can anyone help? I need to know what I can remove and, if it's going to affect anything, how I can fix it. I'll take lot's of pictures, too....

    TIA!!

Why remove the ABS system? You will need to alter all the pipe work. Nightmare job m8. Can't you just turn it off on the dash like mine?

I can think of loads of other ways to reduce weight! Personaly i would not remove it. Is damn useful when needed

But seriously that is a major task, not one that i would even think about doing. Car has no proportioning valve for a start, so some sort of front-rear bias valve would need to be fitted. Otherwise braking could be interesting. Dont think the master cyl. is valved in anyway?

I must admit it kicked in regularly on Saturday - when you have the weight of the car getting thrown around on twisty undulating roads it works a lot.

Wouldn't like to be in an accident in the wet and know that if you hadn't removed it you wouldn't of ploughed into something or even worse, someone.

Get rid of the soundproofing - must be a ton of that in the car!

I agree m8, ABS is all good. It came in handy at Castle Combe, late braking for the corners, also for the journey home in the down pour, idiots pulling out and also late braking on wet roads

I used it this past winter when we had snow on the ground and it proved to be more of a hinderance. I'm not sure if it is working properly or not, but it was very jerky and after a couple times I turned it off. I grew up in a place where we had snow and ice on the roads 2/3 of the year, I trust myself pumping the brakes based on feel more than I do the junk that's on my car. I'm not dying for the lightness or space, I just want it out, it's useless to me. All I want to know is if it's possible without causing more problems than it's worth...

IMHO i think its best left in the car, just rig up a proper on/off switch that interupts the 12v feed to the ABS ECU, that way you can leave it off all the time except when it goes for MOT!!

Snow is a weird thing with ABS but pumping the brakes is not the same as ABS - ABS will always outbrake a person pumping brakes.

I agree, but I believe someone who is experienced in that type of driving can get the car out of trouble just as good...maybe not as efficiently, but just as good. That is all beside the point, I'm not asking whether I should or not, just whether I can or not...

                      Mik,

I personally think you should leave ABS fitted. OK there is maybe two days of snow per year in Norfolk when you could stop better by pumping rather than with ABS getting all tangled up.

It is a major job removing ABS, requiring all brake lines to be rerouted and you won't have the assistance of ABS in a dry or wet emergency situation.

If you are stripping the whole car out to convert it into a weekend/trackday special then maybe, but if you are trying to lose some weight on a daily driver then I would look elsewhere.

WOuld love to know what your insurance company would say about this ! :wacked:

Paul, thanks for the info and advise, point taken...

Again, I'm not asking should I remove the ABS from my car, I'm asking can I remove it? If so how? I really appreciate everyone's concern for my well-being and such, but that was never part of my question...

Checked MOT law today, if the car was fitted with ABS as standard (and we have charts in the workshops), then if it isn't there it FAILS! The light must operate it the correct manner and also the modulator/pump must be present (and connected!!)
