    Make your ABY airbox breath:

MAJOR EDIT: BEFORE I commit to saying this works to an aby airbox bottom I want to explain that I used a 12v v6 airbox to do it. My 20vT setup has a 12v v6 bottom air box setup because the one that I got originally had a few tabs broken off of it. I forgot about that fact until now. I don't remember if the aby airbox is identical or not to the 12v air box but the only reason why I'm adding this edit is because the steps might be slightly different. It still can work and will work 100% I just don't remember or not if the aby air box intake snout can come out or not? MY 12v airbox has 4 tabs that when u push them in u can pull the snout out.

Step one: pull out stock air intake
step two: drum sand stock air box opening slightly larger
Step three: enjoy the fact that plastic bends
Step four: push the port tube in the stock air box opening
Step five: take the stock air box velocity stack and grind all the excess off of it to make it fit in a round hole
Step six: make an opening for it in the air box
    Step seven: install it
Step eight: Enjoy the fact it clears the rs2 headlights

My gift to the s2 forum.

    Cheers
    Josh

Oh, it's an american website, If they won't ship to u and u guys want a group buy, or something, I'll ship a box of them to europe, but to one individual. He,she would have to disperse them. Maybe u can find them in europe? I got u this far, hopefully someone will take it over from here.

I was going to fit a bigger trumpet on my aby airbox (which is still a step up from the original 3b) but in the end just done like andy casey and cut the front off the box, makes a big difference over the 3b box.

Acidburn could you elaborate? I'm guessing my breathing is something I've overlooked and if I can open that up a bit I may get a bit more oomph?

can anyone explain in simpleton terms (that's me) what this is for? And will the therory work for any other cars? non turbo 20v for example

It allows more air into the airbox and gives a bit more of a sound, my 3b original airbox was just so restrictive and such a pita to put in/remove. I picked up the aby airbox and ran it for a while normally then cut the front off then eventually fitted a K&N which helped as well. It is noticable and is a good compromise between 3b and rs2 if you can't afford an rs2 one but want more sound without the heat loss due to a cone.

@noel - it would give it more of a noise on a 20v 7a and depending how much you opened it up more response, last time I looked at a 20v 7a box the inlet comes out on the right of the box by the headlight and is small imo, I did run a modded box on my first 20v which gave good results (kinda what andy casey mentions using a drill bit and cheese grating it on the COLD side) but in the end on my 20v quattro sport I fitted a huge cone filter and IMO was a brilliant sound and made a big difference to performance, can was able to breath easier and went well enough.

ah yes. i've seen airboxes drilled through before. that's on the short side facing forwards is it? or the long side facing to the o/s wing?
I'm considering what a turbo might do to it too. You reckon the rest of the car would hold together if I turboed it?

                      Is it fwd or quattro?

fwd be good but will cost a bit in front tyres. You'd have to check about the exhaust valves if they are sodium filled if not that would limit the amount of boost you could run without killing them.

You've got a s2 coming so be content with that

best thing to do is get a full stainless and drill the airbox on the sides away from the engine.

It will make a brilliant sound and be reasonably quick/economical.

it's just fwd mate. i'm back thinking about this car instead of selling it cos the s2 purchase is looking unlikely right now. The V6 didn't sell and there'll be 2 empty seats on the luton flight on saturday morning. A colleague is keen in the v6 but it will be a few weeks and he's a good lad so i've said i'll hang onto it for him. Problem is by that point i'll have a wedding in poland, a visit from the in laws, a visit from my own folks, a visist to my mate in ireland while he's back from iraq, and then it's october and no good to andy who's selling it. also that takes me rather close to xmas to start a project. I'm kinda bummed about it but i'll need to let someone else take advantage of the situation while I brood and possibly blow up a 20v trying to get it to go faster.

you can cut a hole and make the air box bigger, and it will be less restrictive, but in theory, and in proven science my airbox setup creates an area in the velocity stack, port tube, intake trumpet (what ever u want to call) where the air will want to speed up faster because it's following the curve of the velocity stack and getting squeezed into a tighter space. It's not just about opening a hole in the box, It's about creating a better vacuum affect. IF u cut many holes in an air box, sure it's going to suck from more areas, but isn't also going to potentially loose air? IF u hook up a vacuum and use a crevice tool, and then switch to a larger head and vacuum the main floor isn't the air being spread over a larger area and sucking a larger space? If the vacuum has a leak in it doesn't suck air with less force?

One or two things I've got to figure out and I'm not sure yet with the box and i won't know for a while because my projecs are long term projects that are off the road. Like I just mentioned about, i've got to wonder if the smaller stock audi velocity that i moved over to right on the air box will help or hurt me, but I don't mind trying a few setup. I think the setup will be fine as is, but I can allways play around with it.

The problem with those is that, the curved edge isn't that big, and the vacuum affect potentially will be less. The larger the distance from the center of the port tube to the edge of the port tube will have a greater affect on speeding up the air in the box.

                              Also noted,

What I am hoping for and the reason why I added the second intake is that it's like a sequential twin turbo effect where u have one small turbo for low end torque and a larger turbo for upper end hp. Which will in theory match my v8 ABZ intake manifold which has a chamber in it that switches at around 4000 rpm from a long runner intake path to a short runner path.

I'm hoping that the smaller intake helps suck air faster through the air box for lower rpms and the larger intake just get's out of the way so to speak in higher RPM.

For a total of $2.98 plus shipping. WHY Not u have to ask yourself.

When i find more time, I'm probably going to open up the frame rail below the air box, and add exhaust tubing through it with the same concept of the velocity stack, where I'll have an intake where the fog light is located that direct air through the frame rail, and up into the air box. For track day purposes I'm going to fabricate a custom headlight with a build in velocity stack that will merge into to the air box. Much like the champions rs6 setup.
