Almost always - this is hall sensor behind the camshaft pulley. Do a search for G40 or CMP on here and you'll find lots of BTDT... Without a signal from this sensor, the ECU never sends a spark. It will crank forever like that (battery permitting). There are a couple of tricks to workround a faulty CMP.
Other things to try if car has been laid for ages are the fuel pump relay and dopey things like fuses and / or bad earths...
Check for sparks first though before investigating fuel delivery.
The OBC alert for oil pressure is just a side effect of engine not starting.Paul Nugent

thanx will check that out,,what i cant understand is that this s2 has remained so reliable even when laid up for ages with help of a starter pack she starts on the key and gives no sign what so ever that its been laid up. no noises from the engine etc you would think that it was used daily.. how can the hall sensor just stop functioning ?? ive checked theres a spark thats ok..and fuses are ok im suspect of the fuel relay as ive not properly tested that...could it be the inertia switch ? where is that located ?? cheersComment

Inertia switch - nope - not here !
The CMP does just fail - its electrical after all - extremes of temperature can set it off... Happens sometimes with a flaky CMP after a hot run - and sometimes just with a cold snap.
Let me know if you need help checking the fuel pump relay - there is a way to bypass it for quick test.
Talking of fuel - is there a chance your 4yr old tank of fuel has just turned kak over time ?
Wouldn't hurt to throw in a fresh gallon just to rule that out.Paul Nugent

I see the note now about 'ignition ok' - depends how that has been arrived at.
As to fuel pump - it doesn't 'prime' - it is activated via a relay that is actuated by the ECU when it detects engine is cranking above a certain speed.
The 'burring' noise on the key is actually the afterrun pump being tickled before startup - sound familiar ?Paul Nugent
