    Diff rebuild?

Just wondering has anyone dared to attempt this? I know Jeffer has rebuilt a V8 one into an S2 unit. I was wondering about the amount of play and shimming them up etc. Not sure i need to do mine but i have an awful resonance/whine that sounds diff/gearbox like! I havnt had chance to get it on my friends ramp and run it up yet to see if anything is "really" obvious. I am on my second diff now, managed to stop the Milltek rattling on the casing which is what i think has destroyed the first diff. After i solve this i think a trip to PipeWerx is in order, damn sure Mr Birch will be able to make a system for an S2 after all the twin engined monsters he has made! Many thanks in advance good people.

Just get a 20v cq one, swap the flanges and hey presto all done for around £20-40, the diff's are that cheap and normally in better nick. Hence why i've always got them lying around.

Have you replaced the centre bearing, mine sounded like diff whine when it was knackered.

Hi gents, Rusty to be honest no i havnt replaced the prop bearing. Its currently running a BuMWipe one I havnt had chance to get in up in the air yet, I did last week briefly and swung (not literally) on the prop and it hardly moved, but thats not to say the bearing isnt chuffed! Acidburn, i dont suppose you'd consider selling one would you if i need one? Thanks for the supa quick response by the way gents, much appreciated.

Well i've fitted a V8 diff into my CQ housing which is an easy job, but totally rebuilding a diff is not really a DIY job IMHO, as the bearings and pinion are pressfitted and need special tools to work with AFAIK, but as long as nothing major needs replacing, the bearings aren't overly expensive - a specialist could do it for you
Shimming is easy enough, although can see why that would need doing and very much doubt thats the problem - the correct shims are available from Audi in different sizes and are cheap.

Overall, I'd be surprised if its the diff that is causing you trouble, they are pretty bullet proof really
