Newbie and his coupe 2.0 16v

Not yet a proud S2 owner, but loving my coupe. Got a few problems i need to sort though, the cable that connects to my door handle came loose and i have no idea how to remove my door card only managed to find 2 screw holes and it was getting dark so decided to leave it.
So, anybody able to talk me through it or better yet, does an english workshop manual exist for a 93 2.0 16v coupe????
I heard somwhere that it doesnt exist.

    Welcome,

S2 will come in time, Coupe will be perfect for cutting your teeth on.

If the cable has come off the lock end it will be tricky, but possible. If it has come off the door pull end it is easier?

    Regards.

      Welcome

      Welcome to the Forum.
The door card is actually quite simple, you have a small screw situated just above the door lock mechanism, 2 allen screw headed bolts about 3mm if i remember rightly situated in the inner door handle then at the back of the door handle is a screw. these are on a grip mechanism so you only have to undo about 4 turns. remove inner door handle, then there is a small screw situated inside the inner door lock handle, this comes all the way out. once you have removed the inner door handle you will see 2 securing brackets with screws in, remove them. Once you have done all this grab your door card from the bottom and lift up it sits on hangers so will only come upwards. push all electrics through the door card, reach over the top and you should be able to see where your inner door cable attaches to the door card. When you are putting it back on just ensure the cable clips securley into its recess other wise it will pop straight back out, you will see it once its off.

      Have fun

          So,

hold open the chrome door opening handle, and look down the back of it and you will see a round slot for a Philips headed screw down at the end of it. Undo the screw and take it out with a small magnet.

Then gently manoeuvre the the whole black plastic "box" shaped door opener forward less than a quarter of an inch, while at the same time encouraging the front end of the box to come out of the door card.

Once you have done this you should be able to "retrieve" the little hook shape at the end of the cable leading to the door lock.

If you do, you can then look at the rear of the black plastic box you've taken out and note how you might re-attach the hooked cable to the hole loop on the inner side end of the chrome finger latch.

The three points to note are that sometimes the speed clip on the inside of the moulded / shaped piece of the door card can snap off and fall to the bottom of the inside of the door and so you really need to relapce the speed clip with a new one.

Otherwise the locating screw you took out will have nothing to screw into the keep this box / latch in place in the door card. You will note when you go to replace it that any simialr sized speed clip will not fit easily and that you might consider ordereing a few new ones or obtaining same from the rear doors of a B4 in the breakers.

The second point to note is that there should be a black coloured piece of shaped sponge that is taped into position over the back of this shaped box that I presume is to encourage the cable / hook to stay in place on the loop at the rear of the chromed finger latch. If somebody has been there before you, they may have decided to leave out or forget to put back in the sponge, because they're impatient / lazy thinking it is not important. I believe it is.

For my part, I have had the door lock cable disconnect at the actual door lock itself, and the door couldn't be opened from inside or outside. The door card also had the two small little factory standard grub screws inplace at the top of either end of the door card.

Got it open, but a real lengthly nighmare to get the door open without damaging the leather door car by either snapping it, tearing the vinyl at the top front end or snapping off the plastic hooks at the rear of the door card.

Hopefully somebody else will post the relevant page for the diagram and part numbers from the FA for the sponge and the speed clip ?

To summarise, do not leave off the little black piece of sponge / tape thinking it is not important.

Also, third point is if you have the door card off gaffa tape all of the little black rubber "fold-overs" in place as it stops them falling off as you are manoeuvring the door card back into place. It never goes on in one easy movement, so you will find taping them in place very helpful. You'll also have fun lining up the door knob into it's respective hole at the top of the door card.

Sorry no photos, and for the fact that this post is so long.

Hope this is some help ?

          Kind regards.

            Guys HEEEELP!
David wicked response, turns out i do have the little sponge bit but took tht out and the metal rod has snapped about an inch into the white tubing that it has, so i have the hook part which connects to the handle with only an inch of metal rod on it, i also lost the clip that holds the white tubing into the handle plastic- I dropped it in the door i think.
I was thinking super glue it as it goes into the tube an inch or so, otherwise that whole cable thing needs to be replaced.

            Hope you understand that.
            Thanks in advance

vt? anybody know how to remove the door card as i need to sort a stubborn window aswell, doesnt like going all the way up 80% of the time has to be pulled up.
Got the handle part off but now wat???
is supergluing the cable end a good idea as the pulling goes on inside, you cant just pull the whole tube thing and open the door its like a sleeve for the cable.

                    Lagz,

Don't glue anything. The cable is under too much pressure and it is too important to have it break, compared to the cost of replacement, even from a dealer?

Get a new cable from the dealer or in the breakers.

Retrieve the dropped clip and use it. Don't improvise with this item, as the real one is cheap as chips.

To replace the cable you will have to remove the door card. Practice removing one in the local breakers yard first. You'll find it much easier and safer to then remove your own door card.

( BTW, find out where B4 are in your local breakers yards, as they are invaluable for all sorts of reasons. Most people don't, but if you have the space pick up a dead any type B4 for common parts and practising on? )

When you have put in the replacement cable, either put back on an old spare door card until you are sure everything works for a week or so, then put on the good door card for real.

But either way whether you put back on the spare or real door card, DON'T put back in the two small Philips screws at the end of both ends of the door card until you are sure the operation of the cable is perfect, as if you have to take off the door card with these two screws in place, it is extremely difficult to get the door card off without damaging it. It is possible, but you'll be cursing either way. BTDT.

( I am of course assuming one cannot open the door using the outside door handle )

                    HTH.

                    Kind regards.

                              1. I'm only mentioning all issues of the worst case scenario incase it was to happen. You're obviously in a good position that it hasn't.

                              2. The practice was a suggestion as if it is your first time, you may find it messier than you think?

                              3. Ebay - noted.

                              4. On my B4s there are three Philips screws, one on the inside of the finger oeperated door release door handle, the second one is up at the top edge of the door card beside the door lock knob that goes up and down when I unlock / lock my cars. The third is at the top front leading edge of the door infront of the door mirrors.

The second and third Philips screws are only visible / easily accessible when the doors are open.

                              5. As you say.

                              6. You're welcome.

                              7. No, just "been there done that" for 30 years.

                              8. Four B4s with 14 doors / door cards.
