  • Front Subframe Refresh

This is a 3B subframe I got as a spare... Pretty scruffy looking on the surface, but basically sound. Wanted to see how much time, effort and money required to bring it up to 'as new' condition. Been in the garage a while, but somehow found the inspiration to start into it this week.

Then an application of 'Envirosol' - an eco friendly degreaser... followed by some foaming action product what was in the garage. Worked in well with a good old wheel brush.

After a good rinse and blow dry it looked like this - already a distinct improvement - except you can see surface rust.

One the last pic you see the remnants of some screws in the subframe. These were carefully removed. Forgot to mention that I had already removed the engine mounts before degreasing it.

I also had to straighten out the two tabs that locate the metal bar which secures the undertray. These bent back into shape with no drama.

          FIRE IN THE HOLE !

Wouldn't really recommend this method, but it was very late at night - couldn't find raw materials to lash up a bush puller and drilling out the rubber was going to be too loud.

ENter a tin of WD40 and a gas torch... Very smelly that burning rubber but fire can be fun if you are careful... As it softened I was working the rubber away with an old screwdriver. Takes a good few minutes of burning until it perishes sufficiently to fall away... Then just a matter of tapping, prising out the metal bush inserts.

I actually did two inside one night, and two outside the next day such was the stench.

So I'm into this by about 3-4 hours or so to get this far... then another couple of hours graft with sandpaper and steel brush wheels on the old drill to start getting the worst of the rust off and preparing the surface.

This is how it looks now - haven't derusted the other side yet. Taking my time so far and paying attention to the seams to make sure all is robust. About 6 hours in at this stage.

Next step is to finish prep on the other side, and get some POR15 and related products ordered up from FROSTs. Was gonna spray it on, but discussion on another thread put me off that idea - special masks and such required due to scarey chemical content.

Might end up on a project vehicle someday... things move slowly with my own projects... It was sort of to give me some fun / practise at spraying originally but like I say - that idea was knocked on the head. I might just paint it and sell it - dunno... Its time consuming but strangely theraputic at the same time !

I could have sent my rear subframe over to you to practice on if you had waited a week!

Nice to see someone demonstrating the techniques I will need soon.

I wonder if it might be worth using Blit Hamber Detox Gel to remove the rust...would get into all the nooks and crannies too?

blimey thats grafting for you....just unbolted and took mine to a blaster, waited 2 weeks and it arrived back zinc primed and powder coated....along witha load of intake parts, fuel rail and wishbone bushes it was about £45 all in.

Somehow my approach seems easier , though admire the dedication

Well I got bored looking for 'media blasters' in this part of the world - on line searches turned up Jack Schitt - mainland boys and girls spoilt for choice. Plus I needed the therapy - and to visually check for myself that it was worth repainting - had to degunj for that anyway.

No doubt I'll be out much more money on time and effort, but what the hey... More 'fun' this way - I didn't really say 'fun' did I now ?
