This might work better for North America cars than cars with ZZZ in the VIN. (I think all our cars (both sides of the pond) have ZZZ in the chassis number on the firewall).
Good stuff - surprising how many emails I get from N.Americans asking for help to decode their ZZZ !
Well now you will be able to point them at that pdf to help them with their actual VIN (in the dash, under the leading edge of the front windscreen). As for the ZZZ and the VIN replacement numbers, e.g. HP8 for my 93 S4, I did not until today that the check digit for the chassis number and the VIN number are different (make sense I guess, based on the algorithm that Audi uses). Here are photos from my 98 C4 A6 Avant (one has "Z" for the check digit, the other "X") (NOTE: JC8 = A6 avant, 2.8 L V6, with drivers and passenger side airbags (not sure about the ProconTen being there):
Chassis No.:
VIN in dash, under windscreen:
RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan
94 UrS4 V8 6 spd manual avant
