I fitted a shift light to my s2, info for others interested. Wanted something invisible, flash in peripheral vision when time to grab another gear.
Bought a glowshift one as pictured below for £27 delivered on ebay, arrived in less than a week. I would imagine the electrical guys could rig one up, however I can't and this appears to offer good value for money.

It is designed to be configured for 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engines, I configured for a 4 cylinder giving lots of flexibility.
Installation
Hooking up the shift light is simple, it needs +12v live, earth and input (coil or tach signal). The tach signal is the blue/green wire in the plug on the back of the tacho.
I decided to install the shift light in the right hand center vent, these can be levered out with a flat bladed screwdriver from the bottom.
Remove all the vents to get easy access, to remove the clocks it is easiest to remove the steering wheel; non airbag- twist horn anticlockwise and then undo reataining nut and remove steering wheel. The top cover for the stalks can be removed by undoing the two screws from below with a philips screw driver. The clocks can then be removed and lifted forward. The multiplugs require the tabs pulled out before they will come out the clocks.
Connect the input to the shift light to the tach signal wire (blue/green-in tacho plug)
There is a gap at the base of the vents that the wires can be run though.
The main flap at the back of the vents requires removed due to the length of the shift light, this does not bother me as I only use my blower on the windscreen.

The vent trim requires the horizontal flaps to be removed also.

And back together, would be better with black wires, however it is not noticeable in the flesh, flash just picks up a lot more.

Angling the vent adjusts how bright the light is

I have set the adjustment dial on the back to 8000rpm, shift light comes on at 6000rpm indicated by the tacho.
I like the result, stealthy. Light comes on solid red when shift rpm is reached, if you hold it for a couple of seconds it flashes.
The unit could be mounted remotely with wires extended to a bulb, ie in dash, or a vent but more hidden.
I will try and get a video
