Instead of buying the ebay-on you can modify the original centervent, to be a smooth finish which you still can angle towards the driver. i have one like that and it looks good and i especially like the possibility to angle it.
Boost Gauge - Best Position.

Russ, the best place to put the boost gauge in your car is in place of the voltage gauge but then move the other 2 gauges to the left, such that the boost gauge is on the right. Any other place requires some sort of modification. You don't need the voltage gauge for 99.999% of normal driving and the boost gauge will be visible in the oil temperature position, afterall, you can't spend your time staring at it anyway!Cheers'en, AndyC

I did put mine in the volt gauge position on the far right (LHD) moving the guages it's possible if the car has the older gauges separated.Russ, the best place to put the boost gauge in your car is in place of the voltage gauge but then move the other 2 gauges to the left, such that the boost gauge is on the right. On the latewr cars there's just one board and it's a completely different story.
Easy enough if you just swap position with voltage gauge, sawing off the part of the board dedicated and a couple of soldering wires and it's done.
You can see mine here:

I've also been giving this some though as I don't really like the vent holders, to my eye they look a bit.... err pikey.
I'd either considered swapping it out for the voltage meter or building a subtle a-pillar pod with glass fibre and trimming the pillar plastics in faux suede to make it look tidy.
The ultimate for me would be a digital gauge in place of the clock in the instrument cluster

I have a centre vent trim in black with the Rings on it. i like it but have always thought I would prefer it to be an air vent still and to have the boost guage more in eye line such as on the piller but have never found a nice one that would be worth using....Comment

I think the best option would be to have a boost gauge shown as a head up display in the windscreen. When driving I'm not looking at the a-pillar, centre console or air vent.
I'll still place mine in the air vent though

When I bought my S2 it had a boost gauge fitted in the small round vent hole next to the A-pillar. As I didnt like it I bought a new autometer gauge and put it in the center. I searched for a small boostgauge because I thought a 52mm would be a bit big there but I had no luck with that, only found one that was'nt metric so I settled with a 52mm after all.
And Im happy with it although it is, as I thought, a bit big. Picture in the link here

Aux gauge placement defiantly looks most OEM but IMO the boost gauge needs to be as much in line of sight as possible. So in place off any of the aux gauges is no good really as you end up needing to look down to see it, not good if you are foot on the floor seeing how much it will hold to the redline. Which we all do every so often.
Most of the time i have fitted them in the centre vents which works well but its not that professional looking. It does keep the gauge nice and cool though for those summer months

What we need is a Digital readout mounting in the dash clocks like the S4/S6.
I though someone was on with designing a new matrix to be fitted in the dash years ago????Comment

I'll buy two for a B4 centre vent, and if you do one that works for a centre vent of a urS6, I'll buy two of those also.
Any protypes or photos ?
Couldn't believe you would't sell loads.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the A pillar location but putting it there, like Alex rightly points out, would need to be carefully considered. The pod and finish would have to be spot on for it to look right. The location is pretty much perfect for a safe quick glance to see what's going on and to be perfectly honest I do really like the look of a gauge mounted on the pillar. Sourcing the perfect pod and some A pillar material to cover it with however ain't going to be straight forward..Old Stuff Reborn.Comment
