    Random start problem

Hi guys, we've owned our avant s2 for almost 4 years and today it decides to break down while my wife was out visiting her friend, she said the car would crank over and start but then just die, I recovered the car into work and put her into a Corsa, lolllll (hopefully teach her not to break the s2 again), when the car arrived at work I cranked it over and it's started perfectly purring away, I've got the car hot and started it and its fine, took it for a good caning and started it again fine! Now I'm really puzzled on what made it break down on her, it's her daily driver and she does all the school runs/ shopping etc and its never played up until today, will be plugging it up tomorrow for diagnostics, what do you guys think could be the problem? Please,
    Thank you ,
    Kully

Thanks for the pointer, starts fine now for some reason, while hot and cold must of stopped started around 20 -30 times throughout the whole day and it didnt miss a beat, no fault codes, could the original key/ factory imobiliser be a random problem maybe??

Morning guys, yesterday it's broken down again, will be recovering it back to my work, ill be ordering a genuine fuel pump first thing tomorrow and go from there, there is one question I have I've noticed that when the key is placed in the ignition and turned into the first position it used to make an electrical clicking faint for around 2 seconds, now it doesn't so doesn't fire up, checked the relay in the fuse compartment and its connecting up on cranking, any ideas please

Did you test the Hall sensor? You can test with an LED at the connector or by taking the top of the fuel pump relay and see if it activates on cranking

You've already flagged the potential for the fuel pump to be the cause and Error has suggested the other main possibility, flakey G40.

The whole range of possibilities, including testing your G40 (if you follow the links enough) is presented in this post:

Thank you everybody for the point in the correct direction, it was the fuel pump so new genuine one fitted and also the catch tank was fitted by a new genuine one, which has now stopped the fuel smell I used to get in the car every time I brimmed it right to the top with super unleaded only, which is every week, lol. Fully waxed up and supergaurded again ready for the winter
