    S2 vs 968

    1st Post
Hi, I recognise some of the names here from the Audifans forums, I'm excited to say that I'm thinking of sampling S2 ownership at long last!
I'm currently running 3 cars but I ideally want to reduce this to 2 next year.
I bought the 968 about 2 years ago after missing a deal for an immaculate 1990 ur-quattro. It is certainly fast and satisfying on decent roads, but after owning several Audis I'm beginning to think perhaps I'm not the Porsche convert I was sure I would be.....
I've had my 2.2 Coupe for over 10 years and still really like the way it drives and how the 5 cylinder engine feels. Audi ergonomics and build quality are also easily up with Porsche. I'm keeping the A6 for our sensible family car, but I think I might replace the others with a late year S2. I've driven a 2.6l Coupe(and owned a 2.6l 80 Avant) , and it went pretty well, but I think it will take an S2 to be a decent sucessor to a 968 (240 BHP/176 kW, 156 mph/252 km/h). The S2 has more torque at lower rpm (long an Audi trait) and is only slightly down on power in standard spec.
So has anyone got any experience of the 968 Sport (or a late 944) compared to the S2? Or is there anyone in the Southwest UK who fancies testing these two models back-to-back?

    Scary, Happy Co-incidence:
How about this thread from the "General/Audi" forum!

      I'm an audifans.net regular too

I have just bought my first S2 and I still cannot get the grin off my face after three months

True, I had a Coupe quattro 20V before it so maybe a more dramatic change than coming from a Porsche but the torque.......

30mph in 6th gear and then pulls away cleanly. Better still is 4th gear at 40 ish and then pull out to overtake..... Wow!

Hope you get the car you want !

It depends on what you want that second car for....
Sound as if you have a sensible family car for day to day use, so is the S2 a fun car?

If so the you might conside getting either a 968 CS or a 911, sure they 'might' not be as fast as a well sorted well driven S2 but they will be more fun to drive....most of the time and the ergonomics will be less of an issue.

The S2 is relatively inert to drive and a little remote, its all to civilised and competent, which is why I drive one every day, but if I want to go for a drive for the hell of it the out comes the old 911, its old, noisy and slower than the S2 but its far more fun to drive and the sound track is to die for.

And beofre I get totally flamed for this I drive a standard S2 Avant like an old lady so I know nothing at all.....

:lol The S2 is soooo much fun to drive... the amount of petrol i get thru is insane!!!

Gonna get me a porsche next tho... want a 911 from i think around 93/4 i think thats the model shape i'm after... really cant remember now....

True you cant beat old cars for fun driving... the S2 is fast... but boring (well mine is anyway, cos its standard) my old MK1 Golf with a G60 lump was sooooo much more fun to drive and you can enjoy the driving... the S2 is too numb and boring... u get no feeling from it at all...

                Get an old one....either pre 73....a 'long nose' or a 3.2 Carrera (83-89) or a 993 (94-98)...

Other years have good ones but not all...

S2 Ant: Cracking cars tho' 993's are, the 968 has just got so much going for it, the Clubsport is the lighter, tauter version - you lose the rear seats completely. I think the RS2 took quite a few parts from the 968, so there's a family link too.

The'box on my Coupe is still good, even though the mileage should probably be measured in Astronomical Units instead of Miles! I haven't heard too many complaints about the S2 box.
