    Some quick questions

Hey All, I have a 94 s2 and i just wanted to ask a couple of questions(some really stupid no doubt!).

Firstly, When i turn the wheel to near full lock i sometimes get a grinding noise from the front of the car, i have got big brakes on it(porsche)-are they rubbing against something or is it something completely differant, maybe in the power steering???

This may be related to the question above, when i am driving for a while i get a hum from one of the wheels on the right hand side of the car, i asked a mechanic mate of mine if it was a bearing and he said probably not as it comes and goes. Any sugestions?

Also, I have just had a chip (wetterauer) installed in the car and i was wondering if there are going to be any long term consequences(besides fun!) of putting it in. i.e., excess engine wear...I didnt pay for the chip so i am not fussed if i take it out and let it gather dust on the shelf!

OK, im almost done! When i corner hard, especially at speed, the warning lights on the display light up, is this cause the fluid in the various systems is being forced away from the sensors during the corner?

Last question, Which models have the autocheck system in them? Was it an option on the 94 model? Cause i dont have it!

    Thanks all,
    Rich aka s2munckton

Thought all models got the autocheck, which warning lights come on??? it's possible it's low brake fluid but would need to know which lights to be certain

I'm sure plenty of people will gasp at the thought of the chip, unless the company is respected and the chip can be traced to find out whats on it, i would be wary as alot of chips available on the net are ex-motorsport chips which make the car go like a scalded cat, but have none of the safety features the standard chip has, so if something does go wrong the car will keep on going till it destroys itself then its £££££££££££ time , get a proper re-map if you dont know whats on the chip. Plus every car is made to a tolerance so in reality you would be lucky to find 2 cars exactly identical as some components will be made at one end of the tolerance scale, and others will be at the other end of the scale. Best bet is to have the car custom re-mapped then the chip is for your engine, with your set up, and this will achieve better results but with safety features still retained. The S2 does rub the tyres at low speed on full lock (come to think of it they rub alot more at high speed ) , if your running standard wheels this is probably the cause, unless the caliper is rediculously close to the wheel and flex will cause it to touch, rule of thumb, there should be not less than 4mm between the caliper and wheel (Mine is 5mm). And as for the sensors you need to know what symbol is displayed, quite often its low PAS fluid, but check, it could be something more critical.

I think your grinding noise comes from low fluid in the steering system, I have changed a hole hell full of pumps here in Iceland cause people dont fill up, until its to late

Thanks for your replys guys, Graham, the chip was remammped specially for the car by someone i respect. It does have all the safty systems still in it so i presume that means that the chip will be ok!

urquattro-island, i have checked the fluid level for the steering and it is exactly halfway betweem the min and max.

cheers Ian, can some one confirm that all models have the autocheck system? Cause i dont get warning lights at start up, but i also dont get the "OK"

          Thanks guy, you rock!!!

I also thought all S2's had the autocheck system. I have a G reg CQ20 and that has it in (but it was an option) and as the S2 was the top spec car it should have had it in. Is yours just not working????

                    Link to vid not working.

Early Audi's with Autocheck used to cycle through the check system as soon as you turned the ignition "on". Obviously the check would cancel as soon as you fired the starter. You could get it to cycle through again once the engine was running by pressing in the far left (closest to the temp guage) stalk on the main clocks panel, but it won't run through if you are moving above 5mph.
Later cars didn't do this, you had to initiate it yourself at ignition "on" or with the engine running again below 5mph. (same stalk)

That is the first time I've seen an S2 without autocheck. How strange IIRC that's called "minicheck" here.
Above is still the case for Uk cars though..

Yeah wierd. Maybe it was an option on Aussie S2's.

                          hi

i think you dont have the auto check, the three lights you have in the top, do not come on the auto check..
