Is there still a lot of standard cars going about..

Just wondering if there were any standard cars still on the go .. My car is still standard at the the min but i'm looking to buy a brake conversion kit as my brakes are pretty poor at the min. Is it worthwhile keeping the car standard or should i just follow suit and spend spend spend... My daily driver is a MK2 Golf 16v which when new was treated to a BR Motorsport 2 litre conversion ( dynoed at 193bhp with k-star module dis-connected and the timing set as per spec.) Previous to that i owned a Oak green MK2 Golf 16v with a Oettinger 2 litre conversion (182 bhp ). I'm just wondering if i should be boring Mr original or follow the rest of the forum members and modify.
Spec of car is as follows ,, 84k, Indigo blue, heated leather, aircon, elec glass sunroof, walnut dash, elec rear windows , fash and probably a few more mods that i don't realise yet. Would like more power as in RS2 spec but is it worth it ????...

Depends on your needs I would say...

But YES!!! it is totally worth it........

Pound per bhp............. having a turbo to start with helps a whole lot

Start saving for RS2 bits is the next step..........

You can always remove the bits if you ever decide to sell her....they sell like hotcakes round here

In many cases there is a reason why many members have enhanced their cars. Some things like the brakes need uprating whereas, with suspension for example, it's a good excuse to fit performance items as and when the OE stuff wears out and performace stuff isn't much more expensive.

An ECU remap is a good first start for an instant power fix (going to get there soon!) but if you're going to swap turbos and ICs etc. then do that first to get the most out of it.

RS2 kit is a great way of upgrading without loads of custom fabrication etc. but for bigger power you'll need to go custom/other tuner.

Sounds like you've had some pretty serios Golfs. 193bhp is very impressive

There are a few stock ones knocking about, but they appear to be in the minority, here especially. For the general public, a standard car will have more resale value as who wants one that has been 'barried up by a boy racer', but to be honest if anyone is looking for an S2 then they are probably an enthusiast anyway and will be less bothered or even attracted by a well modified car.

Recently, 'Used Car Roadshow' on Granada Men and Motors had great trouble finding a stock Avant for their section on depreciation-less motoring. They did eventually, and as a bonus managed to find a very tidy Corrado VR6 for next weeks show (I think) but that is another story.......

Mine is stock at the moment, but the brakes are pretty rubbish arn't they! Don't have that much confidence in them. I Dont think I'd bother spending big money on aftermarket ones but RS2 porsche brakes or maybe some bigger audi brakes wouldn't really make the car a modified car IMO. Im most affraid of getting a new exhaust fitted as I think that would be the biggest give away sign of a modified car! Will probably chip the ECU as, lets be honest, it would be rude not to!

My avant is stock apart from the radio I would say.

I've just bought some 996 brakes etc. to go on it, but apart from that no other mods.

My S3 is also standard. My take on these being sensible mods / upgrades are worth doing, but to change lots of things and possibly end up with a worse car than when you started is really not much good.

I did do a complete running gear rebuild on my coupe quattro 20v, even going down the route of fitting S2 hubs and avus wheels to it, but it was all genuine Audi stuff.

Re chipping the ecu on my diesel Audi's has also been done, great performance gain for little outlay. the worst part was the doubling of the insurance excess.

Thanks for your advice guys. First step is to get the brakes sorted as they are well past their best, after that i'm pretty keen to go down the RS2 conversion or similar route.
My previous cars have mostly all been modified ( GTi engineering 16v mk2 golf, Oettinger mk2 golf, GTi engineering mk1 golf, 200bhp corrado g60 and my current car
              br motorsport mk2 golf. I love the S2 but i don't want to de-value it .... completely.

                  Keep it standard!

Hi, I have read some of the other articles, but as I am keen to purchase an S2 in the not too distant future I am only going to look at Standard ones. Modified don't appeal to me. Not that there is anything wrong with personalising an s2.
I notice you live in Scotland. So do I. If you even think of selling it I might be interested - standard only though.

                  Happy driving.

                    @Gary - welcome!
Good luck finding a non-modified S2, if you do find one, post it up here I'm sure the forum would be very interested to learn about any that are left. We'd then also keep a interested eye out for how long it takes you to succumb to the dark side of S2 mods, especially considering how easy it all is to get more power, better brakes, headlights that work in the dark, better handling etc...

My S2 3B is standard. It's even got the orange indicators. I've only changed the battery, a few bulbs and changed the tires. The guy before me worked for Audi so every part was one for one.

                        Rock on!

                              Standard S2's

Thanks guys. I have been keen on getting my hands on an S2 for over 10 years. My wife is a bit hesitant on having a second car particularly after having a baby 5 months ago. She's the sensible one of the three!
Please keep me posted of any Standard S2's you hear of. I am particularly keen on ones that are either red (first choice) or dark blue. Avus wheels (as standard). Must have Full Service History (is it important for this to be with Audi?). No rush though as I have to work on the missus a bit more.
I check autotrader every day. A couple of weeks ago AM Cars of Exeter had a mint standard dark blue available but not surprisingly it went within 5 days.

Any thoughts on servicing? Should this be carried out by Audi, or quattro specialist, or how?

                              Looking forward to your replys.

                              Cheers
