Hi you need to get the centre consol out to get at the 3 VDO dials to change the bulbs, which Ive had to do just recently. Also useful to loosen the rear centre consol to help with room.

To do this firstly remove the rear ashtray. A 13mm nut should be revealed which you need to remove and the washer. Next remove the little squarish plate in the grab area for the handbrake and below the gear stick – this reveals a 8mm hex headed bolt that holds the rear centre consol (that houses the handbrake) to the centre consol. With these both removed the centre rear consol is free enough to be able to be moved upwards at the front to disengage with the centre consol and then to be pushed slightly towards the rear of the car, sliding along the handbrake shroud, to aid clearance on the centre consol. Might as well unscrew the gear knob at this point while you’re at it.

Next you need to remove the little bit of black trim that sits in front of the top edge of VDOs (if you don’t remove this first you will most likely damage the lugs on the centre consol either side of the VDOs trying to wrest it out and have the awful “saggy” consol syndrome!) First off carefully remove the 3 heater control knobs – usually easy enough with a pair of pliers and some card to protect the plastic. They just pull off. Once all three are off you’ll see 2 brass looking screw heads in the heater blower control facia. With these removed the facia can be eased out to reveal the two screws and the lugs that secure the little black piece of trim under the edge of the heater blow unit. The locating lugs on the trim poke up through a couple of little slots in the lower centre part of the dash. The trim is withdrawn from underneath.

With this removed the centre column is now free and can be gently eased backwards and slightly upwards, clearing the gearstick, tho a little bit of manoeuvring to get past the rear centre consol will be needed to get enough clearance to get in behind the VDOs. You’ll might need to reach in and pull the VDO wiring out sufficiently from where is hidden under the lower centre part of the dash also. Remember to push this back in though or the centre consol wont be able to push far enough back upon replacement!

The bulbs are the standard push in (12v 1.2amp ones I think) that sit in a little black plug that simply twists out of the back of the VDO. Might as well do all three while you’re at it!

      Hope that helps!

      Paul
