Is it old cars that have the Torsen, and new ones have the Haldex?
The Haldex is on the newer cars came in about the time the TiT was launched IIRC

Only the the new performance Audi's such as the RS4 have a Torsen now i think.

Any car with a longditudal engine is Torsen powered.
Any car with a transverse engine is Haldex powered.

How about an A4 quattro (non S)?
I got my 2000 1.8T sport (180bhp) for the same amount as a half decent (but much older) S2 - I was originally going to get an S2, and while the A4 obviously doesn't have the grunt or character, the refinement and comfort are in a different league (to my mind anyway). The >2000 quattro sports are fairly rare too...

Tuning potential isn't too bad either - a few grand will push you into (standard) S2 territory in a much newer car.

I understand this isn't going to be a popular view on an S2 site - but reality bit my butt when I was looking at S2s... I can now more realistically move up to an S4 when the time comes, instead of an aging S2 leaching my money away.

        (Wow - that's my 500th post!! )

A4's have haldex unless u mean rs4 etc..

Haldex is 80% FWD Im lead to believe.

On the subject of how reliable the s2's are, its goto be said, once they go wrong they cost u a few bucks, but once u fix it, it wont let you down for a long time.

Isnt the scoobies average garage bill £1050 or something daft?

Ive spent countless hours searching for a replacement, and like Mr S2central.net said, there isnt anything out there to replace it with. Maybe they will bring out a rs3 one day..

Sorry to correct you Ski, but quattro A4s are all torsen, 50/50 split (until latest RS4, which is 40/60 to the rear).

If the engine is longitudinal, it's torsen, if it's transverse, it's haldex.

I wasn't looking for a replacement for an S2, I was looking for a torsen equipped audi estate, with a budget of £6k - the A4 was the best package for me.

As a great fan of classic german metal, I can understand why it's difficult to replace the S2 - I just had the (dis?)advantage of not having had one to get under my skin!

i think the reason alot of us mod our cars is because there is really nothing to replace it with!i went down this avenue last year but when you look around at different cars they`re either, A.far too expensive [porsche 993]
